Los Angeles Times journalist Barabara Demick’s examination of life in North Korea won the BBC Samuel Johnson Prize in 2010 and seemingly not without good reason. It takes you on compelling journey into the lives of different North Koreans who have managed to escape the isolated nation’s Communist tyranny to the relative freedom of South Korea. The book offers fascinating insights into what life is like in North Korea and the nature of North Korean culture and religious life.
Most readers will have an inkling that North Korea is a real life Orwellian 1984, but Demick, drawing upon in-depth interviews with escapees and her own observations in the show-capital Pyongyang, demonstrates just how eerily this is the case. North Korean totalitarianism includes, though goes far beyond, the neighborhood informers, labor camps and constant surveillance of regimes such as communist East Germany. As in 1984, the country is divided into a kind of caste system, whereby ‘party members’ are rigorously selected for loyalty; only they are permitted the best jobs or even to live in the capital city. Everybody must display in their house, and regularly clean, a painting of Kim-Il Sung, the eternal leader, and, since his death in 1994, his son and successor Kim Jong-Il. There are regular random inspections to make sure the pictures are up and cleaned and you might end up in a labor camp if they’re not. Forgetting to wear your Kim-Il Sung badge outside the house might result in prison; hair length and appropriate clothing are dictated from on high, and those who fail to cry sufficiently when the president dies are hauled away, suspected of harboring inappropriate thoughts. This is a country where, if you commit a serious crime resulting in execution (such as making a joke about the president), your entire family, including cousins, are hauled off to a labor camp to stamp out the ‘tainted blood.’
The book follows, in a way that grips you like a political thriller, the lives of a number of North Koreans who made the break, mostly from a backwater of a town in the North of the country, near the Chinese border. (As the border with South Korea is the most militarized in the world it is almost impossible to escape across it). North Korea’s elite almost all live in the capital so the very fact of living in this town implies that the book’s main characters – including a female doctor, a female teacher (the majority of defectors are women) and a male school drop-out stunted by famine – are not very high up the hierarchy. Women predominate among defectors because men are more closely monitored in terms of turning up for work everyday [even though the work no longer pays anything]. The women are more likely to work in idle factories, so the authorities care less about whether they turn up. Not turning up to work is a serious crime.
One of this book’s particularly interesting insights relates to the nature of religion in North Korea. Kim Il-Sung was personally influenced by Korean Christianity before he banned it, quite possibly motivated by his desire to model his personality cult on the cult surrounding Jesus, including a miraculous birth, cosmic signs of his birth and other similarities. In addition, North Korean Kim Il-Sung-worship reflects traditional Chinese religiosity in many ways, including the presence of a hereditary caste system. Kim Il-Sung designed the caste system after investigating everyone’s ancestry. Those descended from a Korean War hero are usually high up the hierarchy (and members of the party) while those from the north of the country, or with returning immigrant ancestors, or from South Korea, are low or ‘hostile’ caste. Your caste, officially non-existent but often revealed to you via gossip or otherwise inexplicable failures, has real consequences such as the class star who fails to get into university and whose teacher reveals the real reason to her.
Demick also reveals the human side to people from this isolated state. They are not all cowed. Some are prepared to rebel, if only in quiet ways. A couple, the man of high caste and the woman of low, date secretly for years, taking advantage of the lack of electricity to enjoy walks together in the darkness. This is especially difficult because any kind of public sexual behaviour is frowned upon in North Korea, just like in 1984, as evidencing dangerously strong feelings for something other than the party and its leader.
There’s the doctor who complains about being told not to bother curing her criminal patients and the university student who, gaining knowledge which amazes him from the foreign books he’s allowed privileged access to, works out how to watch South Korean television.
The whole system went into a downward spiral in the 1990s, caused by fall of the Soviet Union which had been propping up the North Korean regime. The result was famine and desperate attempts to fend for itself, one of which was the development of a form of capitalism. Those who did not have a marketable skill during this period simply starved to death. It is amazing to see the ingenious methods the characters, selected from the many she interviewed, used to survive.
The book is written like a thriller, so in reviewing it I am mindful not to give too much away about the individual stories involved. The horrors of the famine and a gradual realization of the lies by which North Korea is held together dawn on the main characters and they decide to attempt to escape. In some cases, they simply cross the river to China in search of food and business opportunities, moving back and forth between the two countries and realizing the extent to which their government has deceived them. This is epitomized by the doctor who stumbles across some white rice and meat in a barn in borderland China only to find a dog barking at her immediately afterwards: ‘She still wanted to believe that her country was the best place in the world . . . But she couldn’t deny what was staring her plainly in the face: dogs in China ate better than doctors in North Korea.’
But they cannot stay in China easily, though some do stay, because it still has some residual loyalty to its fellow-Communist neighbor, even if China has substantially turned to capitalism. In particular, it is no good claiming asylum at a South Korean embassy in China. Accordingly, they have to make their way to South Korea either by flying from China on a fake passport or by making the treacherous desert crossing to Mongolia. It is testimony to the even-handedness of this book that it portrays the lives of the refugees once they are in South Korea in negative as well as positive terms. They experience ‘culture shock,’ in some cases romanticizing the country they have left behind. They are naïve (one of them gets scammed); they owe money to people-smugglers and fall in with criminals; they feel guilt about what may have happened to their families as a consequence of their escape; they dress and speak differently from South Koreans — they are about fifty years behind. Of course, life is superior in the south but it’s still very difficult for them and the book’s final chapters are tinged with a sense of poignancy. This is testimony to Demick’s skill as a writer.
This book is well worth-reading and my criticisms of it are relatively minor. To a great extent, her cultural analysis is what would be called ‘armchair anthropology.’ Demick has never been to the places she describes. She has to rely on photos, videos, and the imperfect memories, and varying degrees of honesty, of interviewees. Demick briefly mentions, at the beginning and in the notes, the problems with this methodology, but notes that she has tried her best to ‘verify’ (almost impossible in a secretive state like North Korea) what her informants have told her. I accept this is journalism, not scholarship, but I think she should have looked in more detail at this problem. She concedes, in her notes, that the book is essentially a work of ‘oral history’. Many popular history books engage, to a greater extent, with the problems with their sources. To her credit, Demick provides a useful reading list in the notes, including her written sources.
The ending of the book is rather clichéd and disappointing. It attempts to be poetic and it fails. Also, as Nothing to Envy introduces significant aspects of North Korean life, it would have been useful to include an index. The inside back cover is almost entirely taken up by a huge photograph of Demick herself. This seemed entirely un-necessary and even a tad egotistical.
But this is the kind of book you want to occupy you on a long haul flight and it will certainly do so. It is a gripping, original and tantalizing examination of the world’s most isolated state and an indictment of Communism.

Actually, there IS a Jewish connection here. The horrendous situation in North Korean and the terrible suffering of the North Korean people is just more fallout from the Jewish supremacist created Bolshevik Revolution and the class warfare and Communist theories of Karl Marx and Lenin (one quarter Jewish). The North Korean suppression of Buddhism and Christianity is derivative of the Marxian hatred of the religion of European ethnic people — Christianity. The Karl Marx quote “Religion is the opiate of the people” was one more form of the Jewish supremacist compulsion to suppress Christians and Christianity — it was not referring to Judaism. But Kim Il Sung (and Mao Tse Tung) translated it to the principle religion of their peoples: Buddhism.

However we do need to explain the Nth Korean situation. It’s fairly obvious that one staring point is that this disasterous regime is an byproduct of the cold war which itself is an product of direct military and financial support by Soviet Bolshevisim. Sth Korea of course took a different path, the western path and despite difficulties was far more succesfull.
I live in an area with a large Korean population. I have developed a few theories about them through observation and through having had dealings with them over the years. Koreans are the ultimate hive culture and North Korea is really an extension of Korean culture instead of a true Marxist state. Even when they have lived in North America for many years Koreans behave as a group naturally forming mini North Koreas through cult-like churches etc. Korean acceptance of Christianity has more to do with being a social club which brings upward mobility within the Korean community. Koreans, while having a high IQ are extremely corrupt and the greasing of palms and the buying of politicians is not in any way foreign to them. Cheating and petty Larceny is a way of life with a lot of young Koreans. Never leave anything shiny, within reach of them. Their culture is an extremely patriarchical one where daughters are expected to be examples of moral purity while the males are allowed to act like negro sailors on liberty. Koreans have a terrible problem with gambling and alcoholism and have a feeling of cultural inferiority to the Japanese whom they so badly want to emulate in every way.
All these Asian communist systems are not very communistic, they have just adopted a bunch of symbols. In fact, the only things communistic about them are the usual corruption and oppression.
Rod, you left out the drug problem amongst the young Koreans – the men that is. They either spend time studying 4 hrs a day after school or go completely in the other direction and get hooked on meth at levels that are hard to believe and run around stealing cars and shaking down local Korean businesses. (I lived next to Koreatown in LA for years and went to school with lots of Koreans) Yeah, they’ll steal anything sitting around. The girls act moral, but aren’t, and like a lot of other Asian women, they chase white guys like nobody’s business. As a side note, ever notice it’s always about the White guys having an “Asian fetish” but no one wants to mention the Asian women with their “White fetish”? Yes, Koreans are a hive culture, but more similar to Chinese than dissimilar. They do seem to remain far more insular than the Chinese. Sure, I met a few Koreans who were OK, nice people, etc. But you have to look at groups as a group. We don’t need them in the US, that’s for sure.
Communism was created by jews as an extension of their culture. A form of “government” that allows the elite to hold tight sway over all with little chance for dissension. Meaning jews love communism – when they’re in charge. In Korea, the folks in charge realized “it’s good to be the King”, especially in a communist system and that’s the way it went. Just copycat behavior, which Asians are known for.

Hey K-Town thanks for the memories. I used to go underage drinking(lemon soju’s pretty good) with my Korean friends all the time in LA and Garden Grove. As soon as we’d enter the cafe some smartass always had to say “who brought the white boy?” LOL (They always thought I was a cop or there to steal their women) But after my buddies would regulate on em, it was Ok. Yes Korean girls do chase white dudes but also stick to their own pretty well. And its funny how they do act moral but are usually smoking cigs by age 12 and boning around the same time. But I have to admit, if push came to shove, I’d rather have a Korean friend over any other minority ANYDAY. For the most part they are very clean, respectable people who make loyal friends.

In the end, I just wanted to hang around white people because that’s all my MINORITY friends wanted to do, hang around their own kind. Curiously enough, North Korea, a putative Communist dictatorship, is probably the most racialist country in the world today. The government is fanatical about protecting the purity of the Korean bloodline. South Korean military leaders who have met with their North Korean counterparts during negotiations in the last few years find that the North Korean officers start berating them about not keeping the Korean bloodline absolutely pure. At one of the meetings a few years ago, the North Korean officers started impressing upon their South Korean counterparts the necessity of this. When the South Korean officers expressed their agreement, the North Koreans started excoriating them for allowing any intermarriage at all. They were especially disturbed about Korean women marrying American servicemen.
When the North Koreans found wives for the American soldiers who defected, it was never with Korean women. One was married to a Japanese girl they had abducted, another was married to a Rumanian living in North Korea etc.

The focus on maintaining racial purity clearly distinguishes North Korean “Communism” from the ethno-marxist type encountered in Western and Eastern Europe. @Bear: Actually, East Germany was probably racially way more homogenous than West Germany. It was also not so easy to marry foreigners (even from “friendly” countries) in most Eastern Block countries. So the difference is more of a quantitative than qualitative one.

Having just spent the better part of five hours reading about Eisenhower and about James Bacque’s book Other Losses and, worst of all, having slogged through The Pretend Encyclopedia’s (Wikipedia’s) systematic ascription of evil (“holocaust revisionism!!”) to anyone who thinks that facts matter, I am compelled to conclude that Rehmat’s claims about Ike’s ancestry might have real substance. Such things may not happen often, but they do indeed happen.
Note, for example, TPE’s description of Eisenhower’s family history: “The Eisenhauer . . . family migrated from Germany to Switzerland in the 17th century due to religious persecution, and a century later came to the United States.” Yet given that there is no attempt to link the clan’s flight to the Thirty Years War—when the flight would more likely have been from one German ministate to another rather than to Switzerland—one might well suspect that the vague “religious” language is a cover for the family’s being Jewish. Yet sarcasm aside, one is left to wonder why TPE would fail to associate Jewishness, however tangentially, with so noted and admired a figure as Eisenhower. Such high-minded disdain for the, uh, trivialities of religion and race, after all, tends to be reserved for the Madoffs of this world. (I can’t help wondering whether Dominique Strauss-Kahn has had his Jewishness restored now that his hotel-room guilt no longer seems such a safe bet.) Unless the TPE’s Tribal masters know more about Ike’s dirty laundry than I do—not an impossibility by any means—this seems to be the only point that weakens the case in support of Rehmat’s assertion.

Very interesting review. The separation of North and South Korea has allowed for an almost scientific experiment in the differences in communism and capitalism. The same situation existed between West Germany and East Germany. Again and again, communism proves a tragic failure.
I see no problem with her methodology. All sources have a subjective tinge, especially when writing a historical narrative. Besides, quantitative data is so misleading these days. I’d rather rely on a subject’s memory any day.
South Korea is more closer to Israel than communist North Korea. Though shunned by the Jewish-occupied Western countries – North Korea has made more advancement in nuclear technology than its half-brother South Korea.
Just after the end of WW II in 1945 – US invaded Southern part of Korea under the excuse of containing communism and bringing democracy. After the end of Korean War in 1953 – US President Eisenhower, a Crypto-Jew, decided to leave tens of thousands of US soldier in the South to keep an eye on US adversary, the Communist China. The American found, as usual, that a true democratic government is against its global interests – and the country was allowed to turn into a pro-US dictatorship. The US still maintains an army of 38,000 in South Korea and has always opposed its unification with the communist-ruled North Korea.

As I’ve said to you before, I believe the US and all other Christian heritage European ethnic countries should withdraw all aid, financial and military, to Israel. I have read Helen-Louise Hunter’s book. Even though that book ends in the 80s, I think it paints a more balanced picture. E.g. she stated that there are very few real capital offenses (certainly not telling a joke about the Beloved Leader), most punishments in practice are much smaller. Usually it’s just a demotion in the social status. However, that’s still extremely effective, because social status is permanent, and there’s no upward mobility, only downward. One mistake, and you’re down one class. Two mistakes, and you’re down maybe two or three classes. One serious mistake, and you could go from top to bottom of the hierarchy. Of course, sometimes they execute people, but that’s just not the most important tool. The Soviets did it in the 1930s, and it’s just not very efficient. Either you execute anybody for anything, which will make it impossible to keep the country from a demographic freefall (like in Cambodia), or you don’t punish anybody, which leads to the fall of the system (as Soviet Russia was to show in 1991). You need subtle, but still terrible punishments, and the rigid and only downwardly mobile social structure is just that.
Also, Kim Il Sung created the social structure in a way that people cannot outmarry from their caste. In that way, the best trained and equipped security forces and elite military units are recruited from the upper strata, who in turn will shoot their own people, because they don’t really have relatives in the lower classes: the maximum relatedness of a member of an elite unit to the rest of society is something like 3rd or 4th cousin. And they’re not even aware of this, because their grandparents already had no contacts with each other…
Apparently the discipline has broken down to a large extent.
Regarding the role of the Jews…
First, I don’t think Judaism is The Devil. Meaning, I don’t thing anything bad in the world will necessarily come from the Jews. There would be many problems in the world without Jews, as is obvious who has ever seen communities without Jews.
Second, as already has been pointed out, the Korean system (as well as the other Asian communist systems) both has roots in Asian culture and is an outgrowth of a Jewish theory. The North Korean system is not even an indigenous system in the sense that it was put in place by Soviet Russia, was assisted militarily by both the USSR and China in the war, subsequently was subsidized by these two countries (and is still subsidized by China). Are you seriously sympathetic to the leadership of North Korea?!? Are you saying that the North Koreans are suffering because of Bush and Jews? The N. Koreans are suffering because they are a totalitarian communist state.
Why wouldn’t the North Koreans be what the have become? Look at the massive loss of life from the US bombing during the “Korean War” – a larger percentage of the population died than the the slaughter in Germany.
North Korea has had a fairly simple message for many years. US bases on the peninsula to be closed, US troops withdrawn, and US Navy out of the area.
As for the “Jews” angle, I suggest that perhaps Kim Il-Sung realized that wars are the harvest of the Jews, and perhaps, like Hitler and Tojo, realized that the US was “owned” by Jews. That would make North Korea”s behaviour logical. Become insular to remain Korean or have your society/culture, which like most Asian societies/cultures are highly structural, destroyed.
Kim Il-sung was was a relatively uneducated (though no doubt intelligent) person. After the loss of the country’s educated classes in the war, he trained a new technically educated class, but the disruption in 1950-53 (largely his own making) meant that they couldn’t be brought up to the same standard as in South Korea. He also lacked access to Western technology (he only had lower level Soviet technology), and so he built a new society basically from scratch, based on a kind of Stalinist/Maoist rulebook.
His society is a failure, when compared to South Korea (SK has way less immigrants than any Western country, so racial homogenity is not a major advantage in that case), could only survive for so long because of extensive foreign assistance.
He doesn’t need to know whether the US is led by Jews or WASPs or whoever. All he needs to know the US is a hostile empire, and that he can make business with those outcasts who are the enemies of the US (like Iran or Syria).
North Korean leadership (including the highest 10 or 20% of society) is logical in that they know that a collapse of the system would mean immediate death for them and their families. So they try to keep it going. The rest of the populace is powerless to topple the system. So it goes on…

I think your rhetoric is getting away from you. Nothing you say actually matches the facts of reality. The problems with Detroit and London are not due to them being free, having the rule of law and having representative government. It is a demographic problem. And even life in Detroit (and certainly London) is better than life in a gulag. The standard of living in Russia is still far, far below that of the West.
Communism quite explicitly sought to mobilize the “dark races” in their struggle against freedom and the West. I don’t know what ol’ Leonid meant when he talked about the White race in informal conversation (or if he was even serious), but it was not a part of any plan the Soviets or the Communists ever put into practice.
I think you are quite obviously putting us on. Life is immeasurably better everywhere in the West. I have more than a pedestrian knowledge of communism via my good friend Virac, who’s Cambodian. His father had been killed by Pol Pot simply because he was a teacher. Where can one find a source for what Brezhnev said to Callahan? I could only find this one. This one is in a book, and obviously unsourced. I wouldn’t put my faith in it, although it could be true. Russian leaders of the time were pretty much ethnically conscious (probably they still are, with the possible exception of the Yeltsin era), which makes their sins all the greater in supporting all third world anti-White movements for the delusions of superpower grandeur. Actually, comparing East Germany to West Germany, East Germany obviously lacked the non-German immigrants.
The West is not necessarily better (at least not under tribe rule), but surely more comfortable than Communism. I think the truth is, evolution doesn’t care about high or low IQ as such, it just whatever works at a given time. So, don’t think there is any long term “agenda” evolution has to lower IQ. In fact, given that intelligence has risen dramatically for our species over the last 100,000 years, if it has a bias in the long run, it seems to be for more smarts. What we are seeing now is likely a short term phenomenon (perhaps over several hundred years) that will correct itself.

The treatment I have repeatedly been subjected to by Greg Johnson and Matt Parrott – they’ve not made it a secret how they feel about me – has reminded me of how my grandmother and my grand aunts were forced to live.
They worked very, very hard and had children – but they had to sneak and get money from their husbands if they ever got any money. Women were kept “barefoot and pregnant”. There was no respect for women either in our homes or in public.
I know that when girls would get pregnant in school, the father of the child would get his buddies to all claim they had been with the girl and they could then refuse to take responsibility. This was before DNA of course.

You should remember though that it wasn’t just hard for women, but for men as well in the past. They had to work very hard outside the home.

While trying to score a small piece of plastic film (about 1 foot in length) from the female owner of a laundromat whose son would frequently come and hang out with the crew of my cousin’s retail store that was next door. The guy (mid 20s) actually volunteered to intro me to his mom, so I could ask for a favor. Apparently she kept a huge roll of transparent film in the back room, but after measuring off 1 foot of it suddenly shifted into this pissy mode and said: These cost us money, you know ? I nodded and said: Yes, of course. How much do I owe you ? She paused for a second, and said: Well, give me something…give me 5 cents. Which she then proceeded to toss into a glass jar with the rest of her change. I later asked my cousin how many deals her son had gotten @ his store which turned out a lot.
Correct me if am wrong, but I think a big part of the reason Japan and China are still homogeneous is that they don’t allow idiots to vote. In China I think you at least have to be a party member, and Feminsm In Japan Is having to play catch-up with America ( women started voting in U.S. 40 years before Japanese women)
I want to emphasize that females have ALWAYS had a vote, and that vote carried more or less equal weight in the community. But since they got “suffrage” and started voting as individuals rather than as wives/mothers, society has gone to hell in a hand-basket.

I think a rational society would have restrictions on who can vote. At least some kind of literacy test and/or general knowledge test should be given. Of course, all such tests are deemed “racist” these days because they tend to exclude … well you know.
I think if such reasonable restrictions were in place, the difference between male and female voting patterns would diminish. And remember, the period you discussed in Germany’s history was a time when German women could vote, so they don’t always vote anti-nationalist.
One other thing, most of modern feminism has been a Jewish movement. Most women, left to their own thinking, were fans of strong families and having males in the roles of breadwinner and defender (actually many still prefer this). But Jewish feminism, as a variant of Cultural Marxism, has sought to destroy the family and any strong male role model.
Jason you are correct. In spite of the many women who have gone crazy, a large percentage of women still enjoy the traditional and highly important joy of motherhood and family. With my own daughters, I tell them to choose what will be most fulfilling to them, and to highly consider that being a traditional mom with a loving family is central to a meaningful society and life. Women are the glue that puts together the family structure, and they cannot be replaced by anything, including the man of the house. Many recognize true happiness comes from family and not material wealth and societal acclaim for achievements at work. Women, even successful ones with careers, still define themselves by their families. Why not just take the natural step and be a mom! (preferably a white one with lots of kids!!!)

A truly rational society imo would see the leaders chosen (drafted) from above by wise elders rather than “elected” from below by intellectual children.
this rational society, the leaders of which would know about the laws of Nature, would select ther leaders not based on gender, but on the individuals intellectual and moral accomplishments. In a democracy, only the loudest voice is heard, only the prettiest face noticed. Thus you have the Lesbian man-haters of the so-called womens rights movement (suffragetts of the late 19th-early 20th century, in other words, radical fanatics) claiming the right to speak for all women, and the male (elected) politicians allowing them free reign to spew their poison onto posterity.
People whine and gripe about Jews in Congress. What else can one expect from “Government of the lowest common denominator”?

I have had that idea myself before,but there is a problem.The “wise elders” chose leaders based on their intellectual and moral accomplishments. Allright,but WHO choses the “wise elders”?For that you need another committee of “wise elders” but who choses that committee?Again another group of “wise elders” etc. etc.In logic you call such a dilemma REGRESSUS AD INFINITUM.
As a racialist you might say that “wisdom” in this respect is that policy that is best for the race.But you will immediately be attacked by a variety of people of different persuasions.Communists will say that “wisdom” is that what is best for the proletariat,capitalists ,that what is best for business,New World Order-enthousiasts,that what is best for “multiculturalism” etc. etc.
There is no way to solve this problem without first staging a coup d’état and enforcing YOUR kind of “wisdom”.Otherwise you are stuck with democracy with all the drawbacks that entails.
There used to be wise elders in our culture, but not any more. They’re as dumb as can be. Most of them consume a shitload of mood-altering prescription drugs, just for starters. They can’t cope with anything at all and run to their precious little pill bottles every time they feel an emotion or sense of discomfort. My mother knew dozens of these “wise” old people and told me this.

Good Question. My sense of it would be that those Great Grand-fathers and mothers who had eneugh knowledge of Natural law (common sense and formal education) to have been successful in life and are well regarded by their progeny (also successful) and the communty at large would be drafted by the LOCAL populace to serve n high offce. everything from the mayor up would (after the 1st draft consisting of a blind vote of all the other mayors) be subject to a top-down draft, based on a persons written record rather than how rich, good-looking, or charasmatic they are.
Obviously, and in accordance with the laws of Nature, ones loyalty to family, race, etc. first, and by extention all of humanity, would be a desirable trait. so that after two or three generations at most, the whole world would be an infinitly better place
