Review of DNA USA: A Genetic Portrait of America, by Daniel Sykes
In the foreword to Madison Grant’s The Conquest of a Continent, Henry Fairfield Osborn writes, “The character of a country depends upon the racial character of the men and women who dominate it.” The Olympic games offer a natural display of Osborn’s truism.
Anyone who has watched the 2012 Summer Olympics, particularly the Parade of Nations during the opening ceremony in London — the procession of top athletes from the 204 participating countries — would have noticed the full spectrum of racial distinctiveness across these national delegations. Aliens from another galaxy would have no problem distinguishing the Dutch from Jamaican Olympians.
Westerners are constantly told that “diversity” is a national strength. However, the Chinese Olympians underscore one of Grant’s fundamental points: “the most essential element in nationality is unity.”
Sports “commentators,” such as the ever-annoying Bob Costas, routinely point out that the American Olympic delegation reflects a greater degree of racial and ethnic “diversity” than many other countries. The point isn’t that multiracial national delegations don’t do well in Olympic events. It just isn’t a prerequisite for national achievement. The Chinese have demonstrated this time and again.
Every four years Olympian delegations from around the world showcase individual talent as well as racial and ethnic sexual differences in their competitive performances. In fact, racial patterns dominate various athletic events: Whites and Asians in swimming and cycling events, Blacks in sprinting and basketball. Individual competitors cannot expunge the factors of race, ethnicity, and sex when analyzing group dynamics on a comparative basis.
Recent advances in anthropological genetics are unraveling the migration patterns — “genetic footprints” — of our ancestors. Refinements in genetic testing allow researchers to pinpoint haplogroups along paternal (Y chromosome) and maternal (mitochondrial) DNA clusters. This DNA sequencing is used to identify common ancestors unique to specific populations. Color-coded sections of DNA along both X and Y chromosomes denote European, African, and Asian ancestry. As a result, numerous web-based ancestral services can trace an individual’s genetic heritage to some 36 original paternal and maternal “clans” over several thousand years. Some 30-plus sites offer genealogical DNA testing, including several services that specialize in tracing the genetic roots of Jews and African-Americans.
One of the leaders in this field is Oxford Ancestors. The founder and Chairman of Oxford Ancestors is Bryan Sykes, a pioneering geneticist and author of the first published report that analyzed DNA samples from an ancient bone as well as author of The Seven Daughters of Eve (2002) and Saxons, Vikings and Celts: The Genetic Roots of Britain and Ireland (2006).
Sykes’s latest book, DNA USA: A Genetic Portrait of America, utilizes recent advances in genealogical testing to map the genetic make-up of Americans. DNA USA is quite possibly the first genetic analysis of its kind — decoding a nation’s DNA — based on small random samples from different populations in different regions. The book is the result of a coast-to-coast tour of America. Sykes and two assistants visited every geographic region meeting various candidates along the way compiling a diverse database of DNA samples for this national portrait. He relates his experiences with the diverse group of volunteers in a lively account that weaves together history, science, and exploration in a folksy journalistic tone. Part Kerouac, part Tocqueville, Sykes’s quest is to unravel the genetic “mosaic” that constitutes present-day America.
What has Sykes and his assistants discovered about Americans?
For one, the genetic record is unclear as to the exact nature and source of the first inhabitants of North America. Were the first Native Americans from northeast Asia or elsewhere? When did the migrations occur? How and where did they arrive on the continent? Did other indigenous migrations simultaneously originate from Polynesia? Further genetic testing could resolve these mysteries, which would require the cooperation of Native American tribes among other things.
Well aware of the controversy surrounding the fossil discovery of Kennewick Man, Sykes is hesitant to reach any conclusion as to Kennewick’s ancestry based on minimal trace samples of mtDNA from the Kennewick remains, because of the possibility of contamination.
The genealogical record of Native Americans, based on DNA testing, lacks sufficient samples for conclusive data, but some preliminary evidence, based in part on carbon dating of fossils, indicates the presence of humans in North America as early as 15,800 years ago. One site near Windover, Florida, excavated in the mid-1980s, contained 177 bodies. Sykes’s own analysis reveals that the Windover data “are highly variable” and consequently unreliable in terms of deciphering the ancestry of those early inhabitants. It’s still speculative as to whether the first Americans arrived from Siberia across the Bering Strait during the last Ice Age or via transatlantic or transpacific voyage, which Thor Heyerdahl was able to replicate in his famous Kon-Tiki expedition in 1947.
Second, it comes as no surprise that Sykes finds “the numerical dominance of European Americans in large swaths of the United States.” After all, the first settlers in North America were from Europe, America’s founding fathers were of European origin, America’s political, cultural, religious, and civic institutions are based on British and German influences, and the U.S. population is predominantly of European extraction (non-Hispanic Whites constitute 72 percent of the U.S. population based on 2010 census data, nearly three out of four Americans).
Sykes traces the arrival of the first Europeans to the time of the Norseman Explorer Leif Erikson (circa 1002 AD) and highlights early European settlements in North America. One interesting discovery of Sykes’s genealogical research is that New Englanders, historically a bastion of WASPs, seem to have greater genetic homogeneity as descendants of Europeans. In other words, they are less likely to have traces of non-European genes compared to Whites in other regions of the U.S. He claims that Whites in the South are more apt to have some interracial admixture, relative to other regions, in part, because of the large presence of Blacks in that region.
Another interesting but not exactly startling discovery is that one-third of African Americans have some degree of European ancestry. Interest among American Blacks in their African ancestry is quite high, which has led to www.AfricanAncestry.com, a genealogical service founded in 2003 that assists African Americans in tracing their family roots to African countries. Sykes notes that the reaction of American Blacks is often one of shock or denial when confronted with the news that they have some traces of European ancestry in their DNA.
Sykes lampoons Oprah Winfrey’s much-touted “I-am-a-Zulu” claim in 2005. The talk show queen, on a visit to South Africa, stated that she could trace her ancestry to the “Zulu” nation prior to consulting the testing service, which analyzed her DNA, as to the legitimacy of her contention. As Sykes notes, “When the lab results did come back, it was obvious that Oprah’s mitochondrial DNA matched others from West Africa, in particular Liberia, much more closely than anyone from Zululand.”
On the subject of race and racial differences, Sykes is more conventionally ‘PC’ but rejects the sociological “critical-race theory” that race and ethnicity have nothing to do with genetics. On the one hand, he seems levelheaded and realistic, not pulling any punches when discussing ancestral realities; on the other hand, he seems hypersensitive to racial minority perceptions of race differences.
For example, Sykes mentions the 1998 DNA analysis that claimed Thomas Jefferson fathered a child with his mix-raced slave Sally Hemings. The basis for the claim — DNA samples taken not of Jefferson directly but of male descendants of Jefferson’s uncle — has been challenged by Thomas Traut, professor of biochemistry and biophysics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a commission of distinguished experts who issued a report in 2011 contesting the evidence, which appeared in Nature. Sykes’s summary of the DNA analysis as ultimately conclusive disregards credible discrepancies of the so-called evidence.
There are parts of Sykes’s book that is so ‘PC’ that it ventures into the realm of the ridiculous. He seems to go to great lengths to make sure that no one is offended by his portrayal of America’s “genetic mosaic.” Take for example, Sykes’s description of Henry Louis Gates, the Black director of Harvard University’s W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research, as a “prominent and highly regarded…scholar” during a visit with Gates at the Du Bois Institute. According to Sykes,
Gates could not have been more accommodating when Ulla [Sykes’s assistant] and I met him at the Du Bois Institute in Harvard. He took us on a whistle-stop tour of the institute, where we saw the world’s only hip-hop archive, with recordings, memorabilia, and even the footwear of famous rap stars, and, in separate libraries, a fabulous collection of African and African American art, involving one project titled The Image of the Black in Western Art.
Sykes relates his encounter with Gates, including a dinner with the director of the “Hip Hop Archive” and Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, a professor of History and chair of the Department of African and African American Studies, and comments that “Ulla and I have rarely had such an entertaining evening.” As much as this seems like some hilarious scene out of a Tom Wolfe novel, it reflects the extent to which an accomplished scientist is willing to compromise his own credibility in order to avoid any appearance of “insensitivity” as a scholar in a racially “sensitive” area of research. The image of Sykes getting down with rap music at Harvard is ridiculous, but at the same time a horrifying comment on the decline of culture in America.
This patronizing effort has its limits, even in a semi-embarrassing context. Sykes describes his visit to Washington, D.C., which included a meeting with the founders of www.AfricanAncestry and an interview with African American Talk Show host Mark Thompson. Sykes rather anxiously explains how
We got into a taxi and headed for the studios [Sirius/XM] on the other side of town. Gone were the wide boulevards near our hotel, a stone’s throw from the White House. The streets were narrower and the buildings crowded in on us as the taxi weaved in and out of traffic. By now it was dark and the people on the street hard to see. Any sense of unease was soon dispelled by the bright lights of the Sirius XM building….
Someone unfamiliar with the District of Columbia would probably not pick up on the fact that Sykes’s “sense of unease” in a “dark” place “on the other side of town” where the “people on the street [were] hard to see” is because that area in Northeast D.C., near the Sirius/XM studios, is a dangerous Black slum. It is an area that would make the most stalwart egalitarian Englishman nervous to the point of breaking out with a bad case of shingles. Loitering is rampant, and shootings and muggings are frequent.
Another shortcoming of DNA USA is putting the “genetic portrait of America” into some interpretative context. In other words, drawing out reasonable inferences and likely implications of America’s demographic changes. The findings appear in a vacuum, relatively speaking. If America’s largest ancestral group continues to diminish to minority status by 2050, what does this mean for our institutions?
Serious scholars such as Sykes should abandon the ‘PC’ window-dressing and let the facts speak for themselves. Applauding the work of a director of a “hip hop archive” or comparing one’s adventurous research endeavor to the protagonists in Easy Rider undercuts one’s credibility. John Randall Baker, arguably the most objective preeminent authority on the biology of race, set a high standard for researchers to follow. Unfortunately, Sykes’s latest work on America’s genetic profile aims a little lower.
Facing the Future as a Minority
What is a “non-Hispanic White?” I hate this term almost as much as I hate the term “gentile.” So Whites are to be defined in relation to hispanics, as if hispanics actually matter from a civilizational perspective? What’s next, “non-Samoan Whites?” “Non-Pakistani Whites?”
Sykes should have been so “politically incorrect” as to explore more the possibility that the first inhabitants of North America were not the Mongolian Amerinds from Siberia but the Caucasian Solutrians from Europe, a population that in all probability was genocided by the invading Mongolian Amerinds.
Does Sykes use the word “race” openly, or does he beat around the bush with terms like “ethnic groups” or “continental populations” of Ashley Montague and Cavalli-Sforza respectively?
If the Caucasian population of America declines further, we should not be surprized that things like hip-hop and rap are celebrated as expressions of “high culture”. After all, not race is a social construct, but society ( culture ) is a racial construct.

With regard to the ethnic map of America, I remember having seen such a map on which concentrations of Jews were indicated. Their geography betrays their main activity. To wit : most big cities (trade), New York (banks, stock exchange), Las Vegas (gambling), Washington (control of politics), Los Angeles ( film industry =mind control), San Francisco ( promotion of degeneracy), and finally Florida ( retirement=enjoying the “well earned” money). Such a revealing map could be called “the geography of parasitism”.
Compare that with the distribution of ethnic Germans, mainly in the Mid West where the wilderness was tamed by farming. One could call that “the geography of honest labour”. Quite a contrast.
Kon-Tiki (as the name alone might well suggest) was a trans-Pacific voyage– from South America to Polynesia– not a “transatlantic” one.
Also, it should be pointed out that mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is separate and distinct from our genomic DNA, and that mtDNA– which is used to trace our respective maternal lines of descent, as the (male-related) Y chromosome is used to trace our respective paternal lines of descent– is not derived from the (female-related) X chromosome that we all carry within our respective genomes.
As for comments complaining about the division of American demography into the binary ethnic categories of Hispanic and non-Hispanic, that unfortunate addition to the Census Bureau’s classification system took place in 1970, under the Nixon Administration– not under some later bolshevized Democratic administration, seeking political advantage as a result! Here is how it was determined, back then, through a question asked of only a subset of the entire resident population:

@Franklin Ryckaert: Franklin, I can completely relate to your premise here. The Germans, along with possibly the Irish, could be called the backbone, the foundation that made this nation great. Denigrated as Okies and worthless people during the dustbowl era, the Irish went through hell, and unjustly so. They were considered scum by the California authorities, that today give illegal aliens carte blanche to the point of bankrupting the state. The contrast in treatment is SICKENING.
As for the Germans, they suffered even greater indignities. During WW1 they had their farms burned down by ignorants and suffered every other kind of vile treatment. It got so bad, that even dachshunds were killed because they had a german name. Yet truth be told, the greater part of American culture has a distinct German tinge to it. From beer, to kindergarten, to pie, ( appple strudel, as in American as apple pie). to even such things as Cole Slaw, the German word for cabbage being Kohl and and made acceptable in English as Cole Slaw,etc. When one drives across the U.S. and sees how almost all schools have an appearence as being army barracks, this is because Thomas Jeffersoln vistited Prussia and designed the first American schools this way. American culture is at least 50 percent German heritage, a fact that some people have kept so well hidden.

@Alice Teller: Pluralism is an alien, unAmerican theme that was forcibly imposed on American politicians & leaders in the early nineteen-hundreds. I remember in my own lifetime from the fifties how media & anti-defamation groups heaped hatred, vilification, and defamation on the heads of those so forgetful as to call America a “Christian nation.” From what I can tell, it wasn’t Jewish genius that was embraced in adopting “pluralism” as the nation’s keynote, it was the threat of open slander and personal attacks. White Americans didn’t know how to respond…no one was able to formulate a theme to rebut and cast “pluralism” back in the sea.
However, just as liberalism is a snake that devours its own tail, so did pluralism give birth to multiculturalism as a doctrine in the late fifties and sixties, and once again we saw a buzz-saw of hatred directed against those who opposed it.
And once again, white Americans didn’t know how to respond with any kind of attackback even though multiculturalism was specifically designed to exclude all the white cultures from participation in its machinations with one or two exceptions…notably one religious group and all the diverse white Americans who were happy to participate as “allies,” a poisonous term that denies one’s cultural background even as it accepts one’s services.
And now we see that multiculturalism has been devoured by multiracialism. Even the AP news service accepts this new label, and basically it means that every diverse demographic affinity group (not just race or ethnicity) provides a frame for its own political party. The meaning of “multiracialism” has not been unpacked as of yet, and this is already too long, but it is the new environment we and our children will live in until it is removed by the next thing which will be multinationalism.
But the nice thing about multiracialism is that it has destroyed pluralism and multiculturalism, and it means the death of universalism, conservatism, and the Republican Party. Sometime these themes will have to be explored seriously if we want to keep up with the tikkun olam crowd.

I think Sykes’ map ought to have distinguished between Swedish and German although we are closely related. I mean, he put up the Fin’s, Norwegians and Dutch (which are German) on his map but no mention of us Swedes. Probably too politically incorrect for him since had he, one would see almost all Minnesota and a good chunk of Wisconsin with Swede’s color coded; Germans dotting those landscapes. The actual high percentage of German population in America is from Pennsylvania northwest into Michigan and Wisconsin and directly west into Illinois. What is an “American” anyhow? Another senseless, unnecessary and horrible mass killing. Where does it end?

Law enforcement officials are treating the case as an “act of domestic terrorism,” police said, and the FBI is leading the investigation. The names of the victims in Sunday’s shooting were not released.
Media across the country if not the world were immediately identifying the suspect as white, ex-military, with a 9/11 tattoo. Then later as a white supremacist.

Contrast that to two deadly acts of jihad carried out on U.S. soil by Muslim Americans.
First and foremost, the Fort Hood jihad. Obama joked as he was forced to comment on the act of jihad that killed 14 including an unborn child. The media were reluctant to identify the killer as a Muslim although witnesses reported the killer shouting “allah akbar” as he kept killing. Later, a solder was ordered to delete the cell phone video of the attack. Why?
The killer still receives Army pay and has yet to be tried. The government is positioning the trial for a conviction just before the 2012 election. But most absurd about the attack is that after years of so-called analysis by experts, the government refuses to even consider the deadly attack what it was: jihad. The Dept of Defense has called it an act of workplace violence (as we told you in 2010). Whites don’t need a vocabulary so much as they need a psychological paradigm where their own interests are front and center. For every hairbrained jewish social theory that gets advertised in academia or the media (and boy do they love their little theories and ideas, all of them anti-nature and anti-reality), the immediate White psychological response should be, “How is this going to affect Whites?”
All ideas and theories need to lead back to the concept of Whiteness: how does it affect White interests? Nothing should be above or beyond White interests. No, I am a 63 year old male who, from the age of 15, worked in jobs, from farming to factories, to pay for my education. Part of that education was in a European university where English was not spoken. I have been in my current job dealing with what is now called “Human Resources” – a term that I detest.
I deal with people from all over the world. Quite frankly, I don’t care what colour they are. The immigrants with whom I worked as a teen were primarily from Eastern Europe, although there were Germans, Italians, and Portuegese as well. Some got along with each other, some didn’t. Some groups got along with each other, some didn’t. When the Hungarians started coming post 1956, the Poles who had come 10 years earlier resented them.
Nothing has changed in that respect in the last 50 years. Some people get along, some don’t. There are people within groups of Asians and Africans that I have to deal with on a regular basis. There are Filippinos that don’t like each other because of they speak a different dialect. There are dark skinned Jamaicans who don’t like dark skinned Trinidadians. There are East Indians who don’t like other East Indians because they are from a different area of India. There are Northern Sudanese who don’t like Southern Sudanese, and neither of them like Ethiopians. It is entirely natural to want to be with those most like yourself. Managing the interaction is the problem.
Perhaps I overstated black only schools. You are correct in stating that none has a charter excluding all others. However, there are a number of colleges and universities in the US that were founded for blacks. Finding a white professor or white student would be difficult. Southern University in Louisiana openly promotes itself as a black university. I normally don’t rely on the Tel Aviv run Wiki, but here is a list of what they term “historically” black schools:

To go along with that, virtually every university in North America has scholarships targeted for people by race – except for Caucasians. The US has the United Negro College Fund. There is no United Caucasian College Fund, as that has been declared “racist”.
The indignity for blacks to which you refer, has been the same in North America for whites, although perhaps not as overt. My parents, who were born over a century ago, often referred to their parents being refused work because of their origin. They complained about the constant moving from house to house to keep ahead of the Bailiff. Signs in store window stated certain ethic groups need not apply. Many of the Eastern Europeans lived in Jew owned slums in my city.
Today, the US has hiring quotas by colour. Canada has “diversity” hiring policies, where qualified whites are denied jobs because the workplace isn’t “diverse” enough. Many of these jobs go to immigrants to help them “adjust”. I have seen some of these people “recruited” from overseas for jobs that are supervisory, even though there are qualified employees. All of these things create a negative environment. My grandparents were no less affected by the discrimination, they just blended in colour-wise.
Again, I agree with your assessment of Jews, they are masters of playing us off against one another. What you don’t seem to grasp with your reference to a Muslim seeking a new home, is that the Jew owned politicians made the decision to change immigration patterns. The citizens have always objected to the waves of immigration irrespective of origin. In the last 40 years, the waves are easily identifiable.
The treatment of light/dark skinned Negros? Are the viscous attacks on whites, whether olive skinned Greeks or light skinned Norwegians any different? They are being attacked because they are Caucasian.
There are a number of people posting on this sight that are openly hostile to all but whites. I’m not one of them. I don’t like what has happened to my country. Ordinary citizens of my parents generation and mine-the overwhelming majority – have had no meaningful voice in determining the vision and future of this country. I have seen my city go from little violence to assassinations between Asian and African gangs in turf wars.
Immigrants themselves have only taken advantage of an opportunity afforded them. The Jewish owned political whores have afforded them the opportunity without regard to longer term consequences. That is why my focus here has been on Jewish behaviour.

Wrong on all points. Legitimate scholarship would not sink to that level in a presentation. I know and have worked with dozens of PhDs, I can’t imagine any of them trying to pass off that sort of language as scholarship.
I am nominally a Christian. There is no such thing as a “fundie” or fundamentalist Christian. There is nothing fundamental about them. They are literalists and the vast majority are very likely mentally ill.
If you have read any of my posts on political topics, you would know that I believe that government should play a strong role in protecting people from the excesses of the “free”(read free to be manipulated) market, should educate its citizens, and co-ordinate universal access to health care. I also believe that trade unions played an important role in raising the standard of living. The narrow minded call me a socialist or communist. I’m not, I openly admit to being a nationalist.
One small additional comment on PhDs. Most of the ones I have come across know diddley squat outside the narrow subject of their dissertation.

In Hebrew brit does indeed mean “covenant”, and ish does indeed mean “man”, but if you want to say “covenant man” , or “man of covenant”, you would have to say ish brit. I know many Ph.Ds., including university professors. None would consider a presentation like that as “legitimate scholarship”.
The term fundamentalist Christian is a misnomer. These people are literalists, believing in the literal meaning without context, and in spite of translation from other languages. Most of the “fundies”, as you label them, that I have encountered, I would consider to be mentally ill.
Conservative? In as much as I wished to conserve the society in which I grew up, yes, I am a conservative. The political meaning of the term “conservative” is meaningless.

As I have mentioned in previous posts, Christianity is interwoven with European culture, whether we like it or not. Without it, many magnificent stuctures, which advanced architecture, would never have been built. Composers such as Bach, Handel, and Mozart would never have written their sublime music. Chaucer his Canterbury Tales…The list is extensive.
As stated, it is a guide to living honourably, irrespective of the depth of one’s belief.
