But in your heart of hearts you may very well agree with what Joe Sobran said about the man who emerges in the round from the Gospels. I paraphrase somewhat, but he wrote that it was difficult for him to believe that anyone who sat down and read them closely could think that anything as barren and uncreative as a committee or a conspiracy could dream up someone whose words, deeds, and personality were both utterly unprecedented in history and literature and yet breathtakingly demonstrative of a three-dimensional, flesh-and-blood human being—a human being who understands all human aspirations, woes, and vices and yet bears within himself the perfection of the first, the balm for the second, and the cure for the third.

I’ve known some pretty bright people in my time, and I’ve read much of the literature and philosophy widely regarded as great in the West. But no one I’ve met and nothing I’ve read comes even within shouting distance of the reality of the Jesus of the New Testament.
