Website : Mission Website
Description : Site of first Roman Catholic mass in what is now the US, and place where Martín de Argüelles, first white child to be born here, was christened in 1566. Enormous cross is a monument marking the spot, there is also a restored 16th century chapel, walking tour of the grounds, burial sites of many pioneers. All of St. Augustine, the oldest white city in the US, is worth seeing: the Bridge of Lions, Gonzalez Alvarez House (the oldest surviving white dwelling), Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse, Spanish Military Hospital Museum, Castillo de San Marcos and, south of town, Fort Matanzas. (The last is very much worth seeing though less uplifting, as it was the site of the slaughter (Matanzas means “massacre”) of French Huguenot Protestants by the Spaniards.

Their settlement, New Smyrna, is south of St Augustine, near Daytona. Datil peppers are a kind of hot pepper cultivated by the white slaves, and is unknown outside of the area. EAU gardeners are growing them for seed and, if they are successful, will send them to members with the annual seed packs, hopefully in 2010. (EAU sends organic seeds as part of its gardening/self sufficiency project).

Website: http://www.stonemountainpark.com/
Description : "Located on 3,200 acres of natural beauty, Stone Mountain Park features a wide variety of fun family stone mountain activities and things to do in the Atlanta, Georgia area" (source: Website). What is so odd about this place is that no where on the Website do they even mention who (Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis) is carved on Stone Mountain. The managers of the site are doing everything they can, it appears, to obscure the Confederate origins of this remarkable place.
