I recall that someone—perhaps it was William F. Buckley—said that you can’t have both affirmative action and nuclear power.
His point, of course, is obvious: merit of the highest order is necessary to invent, build and maintain a highly complex system like America’s nuclear power industry. To the extent standards are bent or diluted in favor of political goals such as increasing the number of minorities and women—though they be less qualified—a cost will be paid in efficiency, reliability, and potentially safety.
Despite this truism, America and other Western nations have headed down the road to diversity despite these costs. Thus, we have seen robust efforts to change the demographic face of life-saving occupations such as firefighting, where highly qualified White males are often passed over in favor of politically favored groups such as Blacks, Hispanics or women. For example, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Maria Sotomayor famously ruled against White firefighter Frank Ricci (the pre-Sotomayor Supreme Court overturned the ruling, a rare instance of justice and safety winning out over political correctness).
Another instance where ability and inclination still prevail over politics is commercial aviation, which has remained solidly in the hands of White males. Among commercial airline pilots, for example, only about 2% are women, with blacks accounting for far less than that. The Organization of Black Airline Pilots reports around 700 African-Americans working for U.S. airlines, about fifteen of whom are women.
In many areas of life, however, stakes are far lower, so blatant affirmative action policies elicit far less concern or reaction. For instance, does it really matter if your freshman English teacher at a community college is male, female, Black, White or other? Probably not that much. Even at better schools it is not a matter of life and death, though cumulatively it could affect the culture in some way.
Thus, the humanities have been able to politically alter the make-up of university faculty across America. Where White males overwhelmingly filled professorial roles through the 1960s, today’s academy is the dream-come-true of the minority activists of the 70’s (though not of today’s activist, where complete absence of straight White non-Jewish able-bodied males is taken for granted as the holy grail).
As you leave the humanities and move toward the more quantitative subjects, however, political gerrymandering gets a little harder. By the time you are in the highly objective fields such as mathematics, engineering and physics, ability and merit are harder to fudge. Then-president of Harvard Larry Summers ran smack into this uncomfortable fact when in 2005 he commented on why, in the previous year, 88 percent (28 of 32) of newly tenured faculty had been men. Despite having reliable evidence on his side, his conjecture that men and women could have differing abilities in some fields created an uproar. (See Steve Sailer’s take here.)
As is so depressingly common under our multicultural regime, Summers was forced to apologize repeatedly, “in the style of a Communist show trial,” in the words of one observer. Wikipedia gives us the follow-through:
Desperately trying to keep his job, Summers quickly appointed female historian Drew Gilpin Faust, head of Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute For Advanced Study, to lead Harvard’s Task Forces on Women Faculty and on Women in Science and Engineering.
Heather Mac Donald noted in Harvard’s Faustian Bargain in City Journal:
“Faust runs one of the most powerful incubators of feminist complaint and nonsensical academic theory in the country.”
Eventually, Dr. Faust brought back a $50 million wish list of payoffs to feminist interests, which the beleaguered Summers immediately agreed to fund. Hey, the money wasn’t coming out of Larry’s pocket, so why not?
Such aggression on the part of Dr. Faust did no harm, as she now sits in the Harvard president’s office, where her website proudly displays endeavors such as this: Empowering girls all over the world.
This is all meant as background material for our current leading example of “The Disappearing of the White Male Academic: Shirley Tilghman and Princeton.” As Kevin MacDonald reported in this blog space, “Once again . . . all of our elite institutions are essentially enemy-occupied territory. Princeton’s president, Shirley Tilghman, is the sort of White person that is absolutely poisonous to our cause…. She is also doing her best to absolutely eliminate White males from high-profile positions.” MacDonald noted something that stood out for me as well: “My favorite is making a woman dean of the School of Engineering even though she is not an engineer.” What could be more blatant than this?
And don’t think that Tilghman is alone as a female president of an Ivy League school. Currently half of the eight Ivy League universities have women presidents, with Ruth Simmons being the only African American. (I’m not sure if this is better or worse than the days when six or seven of the Ivy League presidents were Jews.)
This topic of White male displacement in academia has cropped up in other instances this week as well. For example, a friend who earned a graduate degree in the field of American Studies sent me information on gender representation in the discipline to justify his decision to abandon a career in the field. (This reminded me of Alex Kurtagic’s own justification Memoirs of a Dissident Student in Postmodern Academia.)
American Studies was once a White male preserve that sought academic diversity by combining the study of American literature and history in an interdisciplinary way. Since then it’s gone the way of most other humanities departments and hosts minority activist groups such as The Minority Scholars Committee, Ethnic Studies Committee and Women’s Committee.
The women’s committee, of course, looks after the interests of women. Fair enough.
What, then, are we to make of the fact that women in American Studies today by far outnumber males? And by the looks of it, this disparity will only increase in the future, for recent Ph.D.s become future faculty, and they too are overwhelmingly female.
Last year, for instance, freshly-minted female Ph.D.s outnumbers males 65% to 35%. In 2008 it was a whopping 75% to 25%. I told my friend he should inquire about why American Studies still needs a Women’s Committee. (Better yet, why not agitate to establish a men’s committee? Yeah, right.)
Anyway, I can only thank my lucky stars for the fact that I was born with and continue to enjoy White male privilege.

Also, don’t get me started on how all of this freely available federal government money is making this academic charade possible by giving out endless amounts of student loans for all of this near-worthless far-left/crypto-communist graduate level education for lib-uh-rated womenfolk — so many of these White women with good genes are wasting their prime breeding years (20s-early 30s) to pursue near worthless graduate studies with often no position available after they get their degrees (major glut of humanities PhDs), plus they get hugely indoctrinated by far-left faculty, go in to huge debt, waste their time with flings, slowly morph in to bitter anti-White-male lesbians, etc.

Today, to be a State certified grade school teacher requires 5 years of college education in most States, and then one must obtain an MA or an MS in the 5 years after college graduation, plus various other professional credits.
In our grandmothers’ day, the generation that taught “the greatest generation”, all that was required to be certified in most States to teach grade school was the completion of 8th grade, and 6 weeks at the State Normal School!

In 1998, I was hired by Grolier to be the publisher’s editor of its Encyclopedia of American Studies (released 2001). In that year I still thought of AS as a field whose primary concerns were, among similar others, the impact of Coca Cola and Walt Disney (the man, not his latter-day Semitic corporate instantiation) on popular culture. When I thought of an AS scholar, I thought of Tom Wolfe, who had got a Ph.D. in AS from Yale back in 1957.
Man, was I out of step with the times! As I quickly learned, what then characterized AS was an anti-Western, anti-Christian, anti-”victimization,” anti-”racist,” profeminist, pro-Latino(a), pro-Chicano(a) orientation. Indeed, this orientation was already solidly in place in 1998; subsequent changes in and to the field have been merely in degree, not in kind.
Much if not all of the foregoing is old news to at least some readers of this blog, of course. The one point worth stressing is that the transformation I witnessed a dozen years ago had been in train for at least two decades. Another gold bug.
Appollian, gold and silver are no more stores of energy/production than is paper money. They (gold & silver) REPRESENT work preformed/products made, they are certificates of exhange, they are social convention, they are place holders, they represent things of true value. We think gold is worth something because we have been told it is, that it is rare and there for worth more than other minerals, that’s all.
Why is charging interest OK? Again just another social convention introduced by mercantile types to make something from nothing. Presumably people (the banks) do not lend money they need themselves, so why should there be interest? Greed, pure and simple.
Love your first paragraph, Helvena. It is perfect. I get into arguments with my husband, trying to say what you do, but not as smartly, so he doesn’t listen. It seems to me that anything truly worthwhile could determine the value of the currency, though. It is okay to have that certificate of exchange – gold or paper or little shells – but base its availability on something REAL. Like the health of the populace, for example.
As to your 2nd para. Well, the argument goes that $5 today is worth more than $5 tomorrow. I don’t know how to argue with that. I am looking at it not from the point of view of a rich person with extra money hanging around which he could lend, but from the point of view of the person who wants the stuff today. She needs or wants it NOW.
So, why is it greedy to say, “Okay, I worked for my money but you didn’t work as hard or you didn’t do without luxuries like I did and therefore I want you to pay interest as a symbol of appreciation to me”? “Thank you” isn’t good enough. If we could all borrow from any other person without interest, why would anybody tighten his belt to have extra lying around for a rainy day?
It isn’t “something from nothing” when done in a simple one-on-one way, as I describe above, whereas with a giant banking system, where they are lending what they don’t have, it’s a different kettle of fish.

I absolutely agree with you that what ever is used to represent value, that something needs to be based on Real value. It needs to be based on the productivity of the people and that means the people produce something(s)(goods & services) other people want. But that thing/place holder in itself is of no value.
As far as usury/interest – No one is under any obligation to lend money to anyone else that he deems unfit. If that person can not convince you they have a good plan and will pay you back in full (with a thank you) then they should not be given a loan. And if you need your money for a rainy day then you should not be loaning it out because you need it. However, if you have money that you truly don’t need because of whatever good fortune you’ve had then I don’t see any reason not to lend it out wisely without interest. Why should a good deed be rewarded with money? If I help a little old lady across the street I don’t expect to get paid for it.
For hundreds of years interest on a loan was considered sinful (not that I believe in sin) even the Torah say, “Unto a foreigner thou mayest lend upon interest; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon interest;” in other words Jew to Jew there should be no interest but Jew to non-jew, go right a head. We have become very mercantile in our mind set and I think it is time we break out of that and rethink how we want our society to be. The Sweds have an idea:

Are you speaking on general principles or did you want governments to control money lending by the banning of usury/interest?
I agree that lending money w/out interest is a nice thing to do, but I would make a distinction between helping an old lady across the street and parting with my money for a temporary period; what happens to me (the lender) if an unusual calamity should hit my household and I need that money back pronto and the borrower cannot of course immediately return it? Even if I am lending out only an amount of money that was just lying around, unexpected emergencies do occur. So, charging interest shows people that the lender is putting herself at risk – not great risk, but it is there nonetheless. There is no risk-free lending.
Further, I would like you to consider my (and others’) definition of money as an expression of appreciation. If I thank you for the loan by giving you a bushel of tomatoes from my garden or if I thank you by giving you more money than the original amount of the loan, why should anyone else be concerned? Private and personal deals are no one’s business.
Your idea to lend money out to others without interest is something that takes place every day when close friends and family lend small amounts to each other because they have some sort of ongoing, pleasant relationship. I have no objections to that and, indeed, I have benefited from such generosity and kindness myself.
But there will always be people who need money today, and not tomorrow; the risktaking lender is there for such a purpose. I would suggest to you that in a free and white society, these situations will promptly work themselves out. Maybe we will all gladly share our money interest-free in such a halcyon atmosphere?

I’m expressing an opinion and while it’s true that I’m not well educated on money matters, I was speaking in broad general principles and so are you if it comes to that. Where did you get the idea that we should have to choose between gold standard and present system? It is a false choice.
Gold is indeed useful in our society as it is constituted at present, but not as useful as you think. The situation looks grim and it is not outside the realm of possibility that at least some people will be yelling for food, water & shelter and no one will want the gold heaped up around them.
Since you are so practical, please tell me HOW you would return to the gold standard? Are my ideas any worse than yours in terms of present do-ability today?

I understand your concerns. I do believe there is a place for government in helping people in true need and I believe in charitable institutions. I have no problem with a government institution lending to people at no interest, funded by my tax dollars. I wouln’t outlaw interest but there should be alternative to it.
I understand your view that whether a bushel of apples or X amount of money is offered the result is still rent and that is a private contract. This is the argument that lending institutions make today (risk should be rewarded) and that they certainly do not force anyone into borrowing or over spending on their credit cards. So we land in our present situation. Where the lender takes on risk (more risk more reward) and the taxpayer is blackmailed into bailing them out (the too big to fail business). I would have let the banks fail because sooner or later we are going to have to take our medicine…better sooner than later.
I agree with the Sweds that interest is just a money transfer from the poor or needy to the rich. It boils down to what kind of society do we want to live in.

(a) first things have to get bad enough for folks to begin to unite–after all, there ought to be legitimate reason for revolution. Note evermore obvious and simple fact Jews are criminals, pure and simple, this in accord w. their Talmudic religion and war against rest of humanity (see my above-detailed analysis).
(b) Folks must UNITE AGAINST A NEGATIVE–and this is where/how Jews fit the “bill” so perfectly, being God’s chosen and sooooo “intelligent,” as we all know. It helps also to see Jews really are responsible in action and thought as I’ve noted above; they are at the core of present anti-USA criminal conspiracy.
(c) The opposition to Jews must achieve substantial leadership upon genuine positive values, thus (1) reason, and (2) Christianity, featuring its commitment to TRUTH (Gosp. JOHN 14:6). And note for Christian leadership, we have examples fm history, esp. ST. Constantine the Great.
