That’s what $arah Palin, Glenn Beck, William Bennett and a whole bunch of other conservatives would have you believe. They tell us that King stood for freedom, liberty and limited government.
Conservatives love to proclaim “Bull Connor was a Democrat! And Martin Luther King was a Republican!”
Here’s just a few samples:
Martin Luther King Jr Was a Conservative Republican
Martin Luther King’s Conservative Legacy from the conservative Heritage Foundation
The Conservative Virtues of Dr. Martin Luther King from the Heritage Foundation and William J. Bennett, the Book of Virtues author
Houston group says Martin Luther King Jr. was a Republican
And don’t miss this, from a Black conservative:
King recognized the tyrannical nature of the government, and he would be standing shoulder to shoulder with Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Herman Cain, Allen West, and many others in an attempt to free not only blacks this time, but the entire nation from the very same government that was oppressing blacks during King’s lifetime.

Well, if there’s been any presidential candidate on a major party ticket who believed in those things since World War II, it was Barry Goldwater. And he was the nominee of the Republicans, allegedly King’s own party. So surely Martin Luther King must have voted for Barry Goldwater, right?
Uh, no.
In fact, this “conservative Republican” denounced Goldwater in the strongest possible terms in a speech he gave after he won the Nobel Prize. He not only condemned Goldwater, he explicitly condemned Goldwater’s message of liberty, freedom and limited government:
Another indication that progress is being made was found in the recent presidential election in the United States. The American people revealed great maturity by overwhelmingly rejecting a presidential candidate who had become identified with extremism, racism, and retrogression. The voters of our nation rendered a telling blow to the radical right. They defeated those elements in our society which seek to pit white against Negro and lead the nation down a dangerous Fascist path.
Pretty odd talk coming from a conservative Republican, don’t you think? Goldwater never sought to pit whites against “Negroes”; he simply believed it was unconstitutional for the federal government to force anyone, black or white, to do business with people they didn’t want to do business with.
If you want to see something hilarious, read the whole article at that last link. After quoting King’s words about Goldwater, the conservative author then goes on to say that an older, wiser King would likely have been ashamed of himself for saying those things.
As I said the other day, conservatives prefer fairy tales to reality.
Right before he got shot, when he was older and presumably wiser, King was focusing on “a more just distribution of income”, etc. In other words, radical left wing, big government socialism. On August 31st, 1967 he declared in a speech:
We have deluded ourselves into believing the myth that capitalism grew and prospered out of the Protestant ethic of hard work and sacrifices. The fact is that capitalism was built on the exploitation of black slaves and continues to thrive on the exploitation of the poor, both black and white, both here and abroad…the way to end poverty is to end the exploitation of the poor. Insure them a fair share of the government’s services and the nation’s resources. We must recognize that the problems of neither racial nor economic justice can be solved without a radical redistribution of political and economic power.
Yeah, I can just see a guy who talked about poor people having a right to their “fair share” of the nation’s resources calling Obama a socialist…
That was around the same time that King began demanding that the federal government provide everyone in the country with a minimum guaranteed income.
That’s right; forget about the minimum wage, which many conservatives oppose. King wanted a government guaranteed minimum income for everyone.
WASHINGTON — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had another dream: the guaranteed income.
Those careful about his legacy say the $120 million monument to him that’s finally nearing construction on the National Mall is all well and good. But as the nation commemorates King’s 81st birthday today, they say he should best be remembered for his career-long focus on the poor.
A year before his 1968 death in Memphis, in his “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community,” King wrote: “I am now convinced that the simplest solution to poverty is to abolish it directly by a now widely discussed measure: the guaranteed income.”
There’s your “conservative” Martin Luther King who stood for “liberty” and “freedom” and opposed “big government” and would be rallying against Obamacare with Glenn Beck and $arah Palin.
And there’s a whole lot more where this stuff came from.
How do conservatives say and write this stuff with a straight face? How do they look themselves in the mirror at night?
God help us.

Definition of a conservative: person who believes the positions of liberalism from 30 or more years ago.
These people are worshippers in the Cult of the Great Ape.
The Republican party always has been the party of the Negro, and the corporation.
It is very hard to believe that these kosher conservatives really are that self-deluded, that they could actually believe such ridiculous bull shit. Conversely, who do they think they are “fooling” with such sophistry? Maybe a few gullible White know-nothings, but certainly not the Negroes.
This attempt by conservatives to try and claim kinship with MLK has been one of the sillier things I’ve seen them do. It is a thoroughly dishonest tactic which is probably obvious to all but the most dense followers. And they are only adding fuel to the cult of MLK. The man, no matter what one thinks of him, never did anything of the same import as a hundred other American leaders we could point to.
For white politicians MLK is the moral touchstone because he was was black. In current white culture white people who look to other white people are suspect. No white man from the past ( except maybe Churchill) was ever in the right.
White leaders are trying to appeal to white people when they claim to be feverent admirers of MLK, Mandella or Ghandi. Obama/Axelrod understands that white people now expect a political leader to reject his own ethnicity and so when when he is asked who he’d most like to talk to he says “Gandhi, who is a real hero of mine”.#
White people, often WASPs, have made the big moral advances in history but they like to pretend otherwise.
MLK was the beginning of a half century old tradition of the Black Saint who can do no wrong. He was a media construction orchestrated by the same power elite who martyred him for the sole purpose of martyring themselves!
If the objective of the Hostile Elite is complete control, then everything they do is designed to place themselves above criticism.
This is what it means when the Devil has a God complex.
The fact is, they are good at hiding, and we’re not good at looking.
And those that are good at looking and finding and responding accordingly not only marginalized at best, ignored at worst, but also, for the most part, unorganized and unable, or uninterested, in creating a sense of unity or common ground and purpose.
Until that changes the Hostile Elite and Host Population will continue to act out this dreary Cat and Mouse routine.
WHY CELEBRATE MARTIN LUCIFER KING JR. DAY? – AN ENDLESS DISGRACE TO ALL DECENT AMERICANS – LOSE IT!
My name is Joe Cortina
Well here we are once again – on the verge of disgracing everything this nations once stood for – by actually honoring one of the biggest pieces of crap to ever disgrace it. We do NOT have a holiday for the FATHER OF OUR OWN COUNTRY – YET – the alien Jews who occupy our sacred land, have managed to FORCE their 2% – with their Godless Christian hating lying Marxist Godless filth and endless wealth – on the three hundred million REAL Americans – to celebrate the treasonous sinful blasphemous lust filled life of total puke ( its a Jew thing).
WHY? Simple – the Negro voting bloc is the largest and therefore the most potentially powerful entity for promoting any and ALL evil Godless pro-Marxist treasonous destructive legislation of which sole purpose is the empowerment of the Jew agenda of the MORAL and ECONOMIC destruction of America. . . Laydee: we do have a holiday for the father of our country, it’s called President’s Day. *sigh* This is part of the reason why no one takes white advocates seriously, they get their facts wrong too often and end up looking like fools.
Well, we don’t have a separate holiday for Washington’s Birthday like we once die.
MLK was a harcore Marxist Socialist who had top advisers from the Communist Party USA. Jonah Goldberg in his stupid book called Liberal Fascism even claims that Goldwater repudiated his vote against the 1964 Civil Wrongs Act, a total lie as I pointed out to him. I’m so sick of the neocon & Buckleyite blowhards, they have betrayed every conservative cause of limited government and having a Republic, not an Empire. They are worse than the declining LibDems because they damage the limited government cause from within and leave the statist Left looking like the opposition.
A note on an alternative to MLK’s guaranteed income.
Here’s a possible Libertarian comsumer money-pump: see “In Our Hands” by Charles Murray (2006) of the AEI.
If one were to give everyone in the USA over 21 years of age a guaranteed income (from taxes) of $10,000 a year instead of paying out $1 trillion per annum in assorted welfare benefits, some might assert that the recipients would then be free to ‘choose’ how they spent it. But others might say that this was just designed to provide a guaranteed revenue stream for those who’d best compete for said income beneficiaries’ money.
Presumably, the more low-skilled (low cognitive ability) immigrants there were coming into the USA (with high birth-rates) and the dumber the population became (i.e the more dysgenic it became) through female liberation and higher/education skewing the birth rate towards the less able, the better it would presumably be for those with goods/services/debt to sell if they cornered/controlled this market? Was that the fear of some in post 1917 USSR, before 1928?
Martin Luther King Jr. was by self-description a Marxist, according to his biographers. So commentators are wrong about him being a Republican. I suspect that this error is due to confusion between MLK Jr and MLK Sr. At least up to the late 1950′s, most Southern blacks were Republicans and no doubt Sr. was no different than the rest of his race. MLK Jr. and his left wing views were a major part of the change in party allegiance.
What people say about themselves is not only (and certainly rarely the most reliable) piece of evdience that one should go by when ascertaing how people behave. For others who called themselve Marxists, just recall Trotsky vs Stalin etc, or The Miltant Tendency the UK. People would do better to observe behaviour and its consequences when choosing names to describe behaviours, as labelling behaviour ‘Marxist’ has rarely been helpful. Even the Chinese Constitution only refers to the guidance of Marxism-Leninism, their government upholds their constitution, so it’s worth reading it to understand why they do what they do.
Test.
A couple of years ago I heard several of these “talk show” conservatives describe Jack Kennedy as a “great conservative”. What’s next, was Uncle Joe Stalin a great conservative too?
Unfortunately, in today’s political climate, JFK would be a great conservative.
People like George McGovern who were considered radical leftists, would today be moderate republicans.
There are no more conservatives, only socialists and communists.
