The spirited camaraderie and intellectual firepower of the recent National Policy Institute Conference will long be remembered by its 275 participants, but public perception will be dominated by The Atlantic’s video clip of the event’s last twenty seconds. This showed a small handful of the participants, with what Peter Brimelow aptly described as “juvenile bravado,” enthusiastically imitating the Hitlerian straight-armed salute. It is already well on its way to becoming the most overplayed video clip since Rodney King got his ass whooped by LA’s finest. As was the case throughout the Trump campaign, actions of a very small number of participants have been used by the media to tar the entire gathering.
I am aware, of course, that the “Nazi salute” is really the ancient Roman salute, and that there is nothing intrinsically wrong with it. But any group which wishes to influence society at large cannot afford to disregard popular attitudes. The fact is that the salute is indelibly associated with National Socialism which is the ultimate political taboo of our time, and we on the Alt Right must make it clear that we are not endorsing National Socialism. Flaunting such disregard for popular attitudes (sometimes known as “purity signaling”) is in too many cases little more than one-upmanship, a play for status within the movement which disregards the best interests of the movement as a whole.
The correct formula for promoting an unpopular or widely misunderstood cause is the old Roman adage suaviter in modo, fortiter in re, meaning roughly: “gently in style, firmly in substance.” The scholars and thinkers at the heart of the Alt Right generally try to offer well-grounded analysis in calm prose in order to convince those able to consider matters rationally (while largely ignoring those who cannot).
But no political movement can remain limited to such activity. Our very success makes it inevitable that we shall be joined by an increasing number of young hotheads with little patience for careful argument or measured statement. Movement veterans should bear in mind that these younger men have lived their entire lives under the watchful eye of petty tyrants determined to encase them forever a mental straitjacket, with the ultimate goal of demoralizing and destroying their race. Is it any wonder that when such young men are finally brought to a truer understanding of their situation, their first instinct is to turn on those whose malicious tutelage they have finally escaped?
The behavior recorded in The Atlantic’s video clip is a figurative middle finger raised in defiance of today’s ideological enforcers—and these are, in many cases, truly contemptible people. Yet I hope the “Sieg-Heilers” will get mere defiance out of their system and go on to more constructive work. No serious activist can remain satisfied with playing the role his enemies have assigned him, which is what “Nazi LARPing” amounts to. The Alt Right needs foot soldiers, but even foot soldiers must be disciplined. If resistance to the nation-killing globalist system is to grow, it can only be by attracting curious outsiders disaffected with the dominant ideology but, inevitably, still partially programed with it. Some regard must be had for their sensibilities.
Still, the spread of the video clip in question is not an insurmountable catastrophe or cause for panic. It did not reduce years of patient spade work by careful scholars to naught in twenty seconds. To speak with the young, some people need to chill out. No group can be subjected to sustained vilification as we have been without eventually being provoked to self-defense, and this is now visibly happening. We ought to have enough faith in the solidity of our cause not to fear it can be defeated by the spread of a video clip of rowdy behavior on the part of a few overzealous and partially drunken young men.

Giving the so called “Nazi” salute is a form of irony, of saying “Here it is, so what?”. It’s what we Brits call “a wind up”. Obviously it can have no contextual value since the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, NSDAP, went out of business around 1945. However that party’s aims, objectives and principles seem now increasingly relevant and seen as still resonating especially in Britain and continental Europe, as our identities are being destroyed by mass uncontrolled Third World immigration.
The problem is 99.9% of the normie public who watches the MSM clips–and by far this only be their only exposure to the conference–will not catch the irony. At first glance even I did not catch the irony, even though now I think this was Spencer’s intent. It’s good to be a bit edgy but the Nazi stuff was damaging.
As Devlin wrote Spencer’s mistake, and that of certain attendees, is not an insurmountable catastrophe. It’s just a setback; one that may linger though….What I really hope is that Trump does not counter signal this event in deeds in order to appease the media.
Anyways, who has not made a mistake. I get the impression Spencer realizes he made one and won’t do it again. We’ll see. I’m glad that no one is seeking to ostracize him after this and people want to simply move onward.

To me it was that he fertilized the ground for the salute.
He must have known the words “Hail Trump. Hail our people. Hail victory” was similar to Nazi-era rhetoric, hail of course being the English translation of heil, with sieg meaning victory. Nearly everyone has seen Nazi-era clips of “heil Hitler” and “sieg heil” together with the salute, especially when proclaimed loudly in the context of a passionate speech. So with his delivery of that final line, in a way he invited it. It didn’t help that the young guys who did it were likely a bit buzzed.
Earlier the words “Lugenpresse” and “victory of will” (triumph of the will) added a certain German context as well, although relative to the final line it seemed minor. The words lying/dishonest press would have been more effective.
I should mention that I loved nearly the entirety of the speech, including the passionate style. If a few words and a line was changed the impact would have been more effective IMO.
I would just like to point out a few things (some of which others have pointed to above):
1. You cannot win a revolution by allowing your enemy to define what is or is not an acceptable ideology. Look no matter how you slice it, the essence of this movement is NATIONALISM in the traditional sense of the term. National Socialism, is the political ideology of traditional nationalism of Germany and the German people. The Alt Right, or whatever you want to call it, is the political ideology of traditional American nationalism. You cannot promote traditional nationalism on the one hand, while condemning it on the other. PICK A SIDE AND MAKE STAND.
2. What success we have had has come not from adhering to the doctrine of political correctness imposed by our enemies, but by rejecting that doctrine utterly. Those who are lining up to condemn people for their expressions of enthusiasm because those expressions came in a form not deemed sufficiently kosher by our enemies, should really take a step back and re-think this entire issue. It is by proving that we are immune to such charges that we have come so far, why in the world, at the very moment when such charges have lost most of their power, do we wish to surrender to them?
3. We certainly did not get this far by avoiding controversy. Controversy brings public attention. The old saying that there is no such thing as bad publicity might be overstating things, but not by much. This incident in particular is a win/win for us…if we can keep our heads. This is an issue which we can easily win on. All that is necessary is for us to frame it correctly. The MSM has ZERO credibility right now. The fact that they universally refused to bring Spencer on air to defend himself is not being missed by the masses.
The MSM has essentially shot itself in the foot on this. What they have done is create a controversy which puts the national spotlight on Spencer and the Alt Right. If we can keep this controversy going, they will eventually be forced to put Spencer (and or others) on air to defend themselves…and that my friends is a huge opportunity.
Spencer is articulate and smart. I suspect that, if he is properly prepared for the ambush he will certainly face, that he will be able to use such an opportunity to make a coherent argument for our movement that will reach millions of people. Who even thought such a thing possible a year ago?

One my most banged drums is to try to get it into the heads of the those on the radical right that they should watch their language and behaviour because it gives a free hit to the politically correct and stops the very important messages which the radical right has being discussed. Instead, bogus politically outrage focuses on things such as the Hitler salute or non-pc epithets and blots out the radical right message. . Sadly, far too few of the radical right see this.
What the politically really hate is to be drawn into rational debate. This is because their ideological positions are in essence literally fantastic. They know this at one level in the same way that religious believers know it, that is, they realise their ideology will not stand up to scrutiny. Moreover, as representatives of the politically correct control the media, the politically correct are rarely called upon to defend their position against sustained argument. This means they lack practice in rebutting radical right criticisms of their ideology.
What you miss is that radical right people are never invited to mainstream media, and they never are given this opportunity to make their case.

The shock and awe of what Spencer did is way more effective than trying to be respectable.
The speeches given on the red ice stream were all top notch. You are a brave lot. Most of Spencer’s speech was fine too, though the starkness of his message will overload most folk’s circuitry. It is not the sort of stuff that builds coalitions, though it has been a crazy year & who knows. Dialing back the focus a bit, it is hard to see how you can expect to mix it up so intimately with so many of the “Lugenpresse” and not emerged stung & covered in mud. They still have a huge megaphone, massive resources, and the culture is marinated in their narrative. I hope you have contingencies, eg. if a Politico editor type decided to charge the podium. It will be a few years yet before the media playing field is balanced, so put the cork back in the champagne bottle! In the meantime, Spencer has earned a niche as the wildcard Maverick of the Right. His potential allies will be curious, but want to maintain a safe distance.

There’s a difference between a generic national socialism (which in the American context looks more like national capitalism) and the platform of the NSDAP which was explicitly German and belligerent to other European nations. As the saying goes, there’s “no such thing as bad publicity”. The reasoning is that even if people are trying to raise a big stink about how some work is immoral, incorrect, offensive, or corrupting the youth of the world, they’re just giving it attention, increasing how well-known it is, arousing people’s natural curiosity as to why this so offensive, and making the work into Forbidden Fruit.
That’s how Trump won : free publicity by the MSM because of some “scandals”. The stupid (Jewish) owners of the MSM didn’t understand that they themselves created the phenomenon Trump. With the NPI they will make the same mistake.
I’m not so sure “there’s no such thing as bad publicity” applies here. Seventy years of anti-Nazism, fifty years of anti-racism, and thirty years of holocaust documentaries have conditioned the masses to react with horror to anything smacking of fascism – particularly something as visually arresting as the Roman salute.
That said, I don’t consider the whole incident to have been a very big deal. I’m more frustrated by the fact it was a missed opportunity to strengthen the perceived link between alt right policy positions and the Trump admin. Spencer’s “Heil to the Chief” speech made a number of good points, but it had little to say about actual policy.
For what it’s worth Hitler is a hell of a lot more inspiring than some dry professor talking about comparative IQs. There is that awkward business about the Holocaust. But I find the Alt Right incoherent. If you aren’t Christians and want to defend “the West” that’s contradiction number 1. What are you defending: the Jewish makeover of the West? Prof. Kevin MacDonald gave a great speech at the conference. The Jewish-controlled media knows how to distract people’s attention away from powerful content. They do not want people to be faced with hard facts. The success of the conference was too good to be true so the media had to find a way to discredit it. In one way or another, the conference would have received bad coverage from the mainstream media. Therefore, I am not at all surprised. The media wants to divide the alt-right and Trump. That is why they have Trump disavow the alt-right and that is why they vilify the alt-right. The war is not over yet. The mainstream media is working hard to recover from the shock since Trump’s victory, and their efforts are not to be underestimated. I am all too familiar with how the Communist-controlled media works in China. The formula is simple: Distract people from reality with biased news coverage. The media in China is always trying to divert attention away from issues such as 1. the fact that Marxism is not Chinese but foreign and Jewish, 2. the fact that the racial interests of the people are at odds with the Communist Party, and 3. the fact that the Communist Party is responsible for far more destruction of cultural heritage than any other group with which China has been at war in modern history. Simply put, they are employing propaganda techniques to make us believe the Communist Party is pro-Chinese and hence that support for the Communist Party is the only pro-Chinese thing to do. They have been trying to monopolise what it means to be altruistic for the people. However, the Communist Party is definitely not altruistically inclined towards the Chinese people as a whole. They are just leftists like the liberals. Chinese Communists have more in common with Western liberals than with White or other racial nationalists.
With a population of 90% Han Chinese and only 10% “minorities” on the periphery who are racially closely related, what worry need the Chinese people have that the Chinese Communist Party is “not about racial purity”?
The Communist Party was destructive toward “feudal” Chinese culture during Mao’s cultural revolution, but that is long past. Of all the peoples of the world China’s racial and cultural survival seems to have the best prospects.

Let us take a look at an important historical policy: the one-child policy. This applied to all Han Chinese, but ethnic minorities were exempt.
(Logically, the Han Chinese have the lowest birthrate in China of all ethnic groups with a birthrate of 1.14).
The one-child policy has now become the two-child policy, but it is doubtful that the birthrate can still be increased.

The hardest thing is to break out. Trump paved the way. It’s time to steal his spotlight. If just 1 percent of the 2 million people who saw the Atlantic video look into it, that’s 20,000 new people. If 10 percent become contributors, that’s 2000 new contributors. If they give a life-time $100 per year, that’s $200,000 per year into a movement. Build the funnel. Spencer’s success is everyone’s success.
I’m glad Spencer achieved his career goal, which was to achieve the limelight for clean-cut nationalism. Only good things can come from it. He is articulate enough to specify what he wants. Trump was a stepping stone and so is Spencer. We need the whites to move right on racialism. Trump is looking like a leftist by cucking. Spencer looks like the stronger figure. Trump will get challenged from the right in four years. That’s how it goes.

The Roman salute really lends itself to ironic use. I think it would wonderful if rebellious teens adopted it an ironic use of it as an expression of defiance.
The way to make it ironic is to smile or smirk while doing it, in order to provide a visual contrast to the solemn, resolute facial expressions that accompany it in historical photos and videos. Picture it done with a smirk, the other arm held akimbo, weight shifted onto one side so the hip sticks out.
I imagine it should be a simple matter to dismiss any outrage it causes as humorless.
The Alt Right should be more focused on the attacks that can be directly related to white dispossession and disempowerment. They should have relentlessly showed clips of both Tim Kaine and Joe Biden stating that one looks forward to when whites are a minority (Kaine) and one believes whites being a minority is not necessarily a bad thing (Biden). Total silence. They need to point out how the play Hamilton issued a casting call and stated that whites need not apply. They also need to point out that having minorities play the Founding Fathers in Hamilton is cultural misappropriation. None of this happens. They attack our history, our emblems, and are culture and we remain silent. They obviously know us better than we know ourselves.

The overseas press had a field time associating the triskele with the swastika. Many years ago I visited Germany, and saw what the German TV did with the AWB. Their members would not have recognized their own organization.

as this is part of the struggle to re-establish our identity. However, playing a leadership role also involves teaching. Richard Spencer can play a formidable leading role in the activities of the NPI and as a photogenic and articulate spokesperson for the alt-right when interacting with the mainstream media. It is of course easy to be wise in hindsight.
Rather than just making the salute a spontaneous and emotional high point RS could have said something about the Roman salute in his preamble, giving its history and meaning beyond Nazi Germany. People generally cite Jacques-Louis David’s painting “The Oath of the Horatii” to put the salute in a greater European context. This might have killed the spontaneity but, so what, everyone in the room was on-side anyway. RS could have said “At the end of my speech I’d like you to join me in the ancient Roman salute.”
The alt-right shouldn’t want to recreate Nazi Germany for many sound reasons – (1)They lost. (2)It was a long time ago and political and technological ideas have moved on. (3)Adolf said that Nazism was very specifically German. Even he didn’t think it could or should be shoe-horned into other nation states. (4)Friends and enemies might have remained largely the same but mass communication has been transformed and the globalists’ powerful network has learned to control attitudes.
It was predictable that the salute would leak and would be posted on-line. Maybe RS should do it again, but make sure he explains what it is and why it’s important. The alt-right isn’t Nazi because ‘Nazi’ stands for the National-Socialism of the NSDAP. The alt-right can’t revive the Nazism of the NSDAP. What would be the point?
The problem is that the media will blow up such incidents beyond all proportions. You can see this incident already on european TV shows. It reminds me of the Apartheid times, where a white man could hardly move his finger when he would appear in some foreign press report. They milk any incident to its fullest, knowing how politically uninformed their audience is.

because there is still a chance that a recount may take place (see the current Norbert Hofer/Alexander van der Bellen case in Austria) or something changed to the electoral rules and that then by some trick mr. Trump may be made to loose his candidacy. Then one has counted ones chickens before they hatched. He is not yet the President.
I have thought long and hard how to phrase this, thus the late comment. A younger activist like mr. Spencer should perhaps not be throttled in his footsteps, he also has to make his life experiences, and you do not get to places by making no mistakes.
But from the perspective of the other side, they will be watching with eagle eyes at the reaction and sentiments of the Alt-right. They are not stupid, and have years and years of experience behind their name, and will be quick to identify people, who, in their opinion, shows any weaknesses or signs of political amateurishness, whether by lack of ability or lack of experience, and push their knive in.
If even mr. Trump does not yet sit firmly in his saddle, the seat of power, then those that are even more distanced must take care not to act like they are already in power. They are not, and that means that one has to make compromises until such time when was sits firmly in power. Two steps forward, one step backward, like I learned in the army many years ago what the Communist tactic was.
“Ultimately we must reclaim our symbols and salutes..” Yes, yes and yes, but the keyword is “until”. There is still a long way to go. For the other side, it could mean a temporary setback, from which they might recover, and for the Alt-right, which is still a very young phenomenon, it still has to prove that it is has become a permanent influence in politics, or just a passing parade. It stands at the beginning of its life cycle.

I am referring to the reaction to the closing words of Richard Spencer’s speech at the conference Saturday night. See the first link in the article above for that video.

This observation by F. Roger Devlin was absolutely brilliant. A perfect description of how the Alt-Right movement should conduct itself in order for it grow exponentially and reach its full potential.
Also, I have not watched the speech video by Spencer yet – but, apparently, I’ve been told that he didn’t actually perform a Nazi salute at the end of his speech, but instead raised his glass up in the air, as if to propose a triumphant victory toast.
However, for those of us in this pro-White movement who’ve been in this movement for most of our lives and who have become keenly aware of the past decades of jewish infiltration tactics, where they have had amazing success at sneaking their moles into our movements, and then those moles are used to subvert, undermine and cast discredit upon our cause of White survival and upon our objective of breaking free of jewish domination of our nations and people – we feel that our rising Alt-right leadership needs to institute a very stringent vetting process that will help us prevent this enemy tactic from being used on us again. We cannot continue to allow jews to use the same easily predictable tactics on us, over and over and over again – and not sit down and come up with a defense against them that will once and for all render their tactics obsolete.
Rule #1 should always be – exclude jews from holding any leadership position within our movement, and we need to be very aggressive about this policy.
Rule #2 should be: If jews sneak into one of our conferences or gatherings and start shouting Sieg Heil and goose-stepping while doing Nazi salutes for the TV Cameras – our people need to immediately expose them to the mainstream media as being jewish and flatly accuse them of attempting to maliciously discredit our movement in order to cast aspersions upon our White European survival objectives. And, this time around – when our Alt-right spokesmen schedule an interview with the mainstream media, let’s make sure we have one of our own alternative media sources such as Red Ice there as well – which will defeat the ability of the msm to edit, twist, or censor the video as they’ve been known to regularly do, in order to snooker the public into seeing us in a negative light.

I’ve scrutinized the video of the last few minutes of RS’s speech and this is quite true, although it’s hard to spot. He’s just raising his glass. You don’t do the Roman salute with a glass in your hand. RS is not performing the salute. A couple of audience members respond by immediately saluting at him, but that’s for them to explain.
