Kevin MacDonald: I teach courses on child psychology, and every textbook has a chapter on IQ. It’s always a bit touchy talking about it — I’ve got to be on my best behavior. I discuss the data showing genetic influences and then I point out that most of the “environmental influences” on IQ could equally well be explained by parent-child genetic correlations: Smart parents are genetically inclined to high IQ and they talk to their kids more. This results in correlations between IQ and parents talking to their kids.
But the chapter always ends on an optimistic note for the environmentalists because of the Head Start data. The standard line is that Head Start has a positive effect on IQ for a while and then tapers off to nothing after a few years. But the good news for environmentalists is that there are lots of other great things Head Start does, like improve academic achievement, prevent school dropout, etc.
However, the recent report on Head Start shows that there are no positive effects at all on academic achievement, social and emotional functioning, or health, even in the first grade. These are overwhelmingly poor non-White children — the future of America
As the Brookings Institute’s Russ Whitehurst notes,
The children in Head Start are overwhelmingly poor and minority. They are at high risk of starting school far behind their more advantaged peers, and falling further behind over time. They tune-out and drop-out at alarming rates. In a world in which nearly everything we value, from a long lifespan to financial wealth to family stability, is associated with educational attainment, these children’s lives are in danger.
So the ever hopeful left is back to square one. No positive effects at all. Indeed, things seem to have gotten worse: “In the critical area of vocabulary (a good measure of IQ), 3-year-olds entered the study at the 29th percentile in terms of national norms and finished first grade at the 24th percentile whether or not they attended Head Start.” They might as well have stayed home with grandma.
But because the ever hopeful educational establishment didn’t want the word to get out, they delayed the report for three years. During this time they sweated the data (as we psychologists say) to try to come up with some positive results. Not possible. And believe me, they were motivated. There are lots of private contractors and an entire bureaucracy to feed. They pulled out all the stops.
Actually, it’s quite surprising that they couldn’t come up with something positive, since, as Whitehurst points out, the same federal agencies that administer the programs are in charge of evaluating them. Short of making up the data, they couldn’t come up with what they wanted. It’s something of a miracle that they didn’t falsify the data. All for a good cause, you know.
But, as Whitehurst notes, when the report was finally released there was absolute silence in the MSM. The New York Times did not think it was news fit to print, nor did the Washington Post. I am still waiting for an article to appear in the LA Times.
Reports like this are just not the sort of thing that the left wants to hear, because it does not augur well for the future of the impending multicultural paradise we are heading into. I wonder if the next edition of my textbook will even bother to note it.

Amazing how much data is ignored. For those of us who have children in the publci schools and cant afford a private education the toll has been very painful. My 14 year old son was one of only a few white kids at his Jr High and I finally pulled him out and put him in a school with a higher precentage of whites. What I found was my son was failing his first semester and WHY??? At the majority minority school children are just passed with minimal work so he looked great on paper and his home work easy.BUT at the majority white school the standards by mostlt white teachers was based on Real Standards”, and he couldnt cut the mustard, at first.
I sat down with my son and explianed he was a victim of multi culturalism.. and he has now straight As.. He get the low IQ issue now ..
You don’t have to be Liberal to have a heart and you don’t have to be a Conservative to respect reality.
It’s very instructive to listen to what Conservatives and Liberals say about each other. There’s often a lot of justice in what they say, about the other. And it’s almost always the case that they are both good at dishing it out and bad at taking it. Hence the Polarization that has contributed mightily to our current dilema.
I get the impression from a number of writers at TOO that they would just love to go back to the good ole days of looking down on poor Whites and never having to think, let alone worry about, non-Whites.
The same could be said of Feminists like Brenda Walker, who I know for a fact would love to go back to the ole days of hating men, White men.
Has it EVER occurred to these people that this attitude, which is obviously wrong, bad, and for all of their high IQ’s, dumb, play a huge part in a problem we very well may not be able to free ourselves from?

What should White elites do? Do you ever visit a red light district and attempt to help the people there? Do you ever visit the places where homeless alcoholics sleep on the street and eat from garbage cans? Do you befriend people who are not in the same social class as you?
Its easy to tell the upper classes that they should somehow care for the classes beneath them even when you don’t model such behavior yourself. That’s like working class people telling welfare people to lift themselves up but working class people can’t work themselves into the rich or intellectual classes.
Should the offense on a football team simply stop playing when their team begins to run up the score on the opposing team? Its up to the opposing defense to keep them from scoring. Their goal is to play offense the best they are able because thats the way the game is played. Any defense that expects the other team to feel sorry for them is not player material.
You argue that somehow we’re supposed to feel sorry for those who are so mentally challenged that the best efforts of White society doesn’t help them to do better. What more could we do for these people? Its not fair to us that we are forever bound to care for them.
By honestly facing the facts about Headstart we can begin to change our welfare laws because these social programs encourage more births to people who can’t function nor become productive in society and who cannot house or feed their children.
We have an obligation to study the success or failure of Headstart and make whatever adjustments are necessary. It was a program created for a reason and if the theories behind it are flawed then we need to get rid of it and spend that money more wisely. We need to apply what we learn about these non White races to every government policy.
Headstart results have implications for our nation and every function of society and government. The government and society are not the Red Cross, Christian evangelism or a charity. Its a government of the people and it must respond by serving the interests of the people and its not in our interests to have non Whites here nor to assume responsibility for those who contribute nothing. Its important to know who can contribute and who doesn’t. Facts from Headstart should inform our immigration policies for one example.
