Corliss and Hamilton are White, and being White seems to be part of a pattern for extreme athletes. The reader also sent a link for Revolt of the White Athlete: Race, Media, and the Emergence of Extreme Athletes in Amerca (2007), an academic book on the phenomenon which is predictably bogged down with words like ‘interrogate’ (as in “interrogating the racial, gender, and nationalistic aspects of Generation X discourse) and using ‘privilege’ as a verb (as in a complaint about a scholar who [Gasp!] “implicitly privileged the contributions, perspectives and interests of white men over and against all others”).
The author is Kyle Kusz who was rewarded for his efforts by being nominated for the Multicultural Center Diversity Award at the University of Rhode Island where he teaches. Kusz notes that he was inspired to enter the field of cultural aspects of sports by taking a sport sociology class taught by Dr. Stephen Mosher at Ithaca college.
What we have here is a clear case of implicit Whiteness, but of course Kusz takes a typical cultural Marxist attitude towards his subject.
Extreme athletics is where “white everymen perform supra-normal athletic feats in high-risk sporting activities like BASE jumping and sky surfing. Extreme sports are also portrayed as sporting activities which have revived a sense of traditional American masculine values and pursuits: rugged individualism, conquering new frontiers, and achieving individual progress” (p. 63). Predictably, for Kusz, engaging in such sports by Whites is the politics of backlash and resentment that “attempt to deny the racialized privileges of whites while masking (and thus ensuring the reproduction of) asymmetrical relations of power in the present. [They are also an attempt] to reverse the minimal gains made by historically marginalized groups since the 1960s” (p. 69).

Kusz therefore is upset not just because White guys do these things when they ought to be celebrating diversity in their sporting activities by only doing activities that non-Whites enjoy as well. The problem for Kusz is that extreme sports is seen as embodying evil traditional American values of individualism and conquering the frontier with heroic acts of courage. (One might make the same analysis of NASCAR racing [see here, p. 20 ff). This is bad because it implicitly de-emphasizes the contributions of non-Whites---"a cleverly disguised version of the contemporary reactionary populist rhetoric about traditional values and the nation which re-secures and privileges the articulation of white masculinity with America" (p. 71). This may seem "innocent and non-political," but it coincides with phenomena like Rush Limbaugh (!) and "the rise in white supremacist movements."
Extreme athletes exist in an implicitly White world where they associate only with other White men---"a racially and gender exclusive place" where White men "can un-apologetically perform an ideal masculinity which they cover by taking death-defying risks, enduring the pain of participation and displaying an unwavering confidence and coolness in the face of apparent danger." By assigning merit to these activities, "these white males are portrayed as extraordinary and exceptional individuals who are different from, and superior to, anyone not willing to attempt such potentially dangerous athletic exploits" (p. 72).
Kusz the cultural Marxist is not burdened with having to actually prove his assertions about the evil that lurks in the hearts of all those White extreme athletes. The important thing is to use the right verbiage---what passes for brilliance, or at least competence in the academic culture of the left these days.
Thinking about the phenomenon reminded me of Ricardo Duchesne’s The Uniqueness of Western Civilization—a book I strongly recommend (and review at length in the forthcoming Fall issue of The Occidental Quarterly). Duchesne proposes that this daring, high-risk behavior is fundamental to understanding the uniqueness of the West. He describes the Indo-European founders of the West as heroic warriors striving for individual fame and recognition, often with a “berserker” style of warfare — i.e., frenzied, foolhardy intensity. Duchesne argues that the goal is to gain fame by social recognition of individual heroic and dangerous exploits. For example:
It was the vigor, boldness, and the acquisitiveness of Germanic war-bands that kept the West alive [after the decline of the Western Roman Empire]. These lads were uncouth and unlettered, much given to quarrelsome rages, but they injected energy, daring, and indeed an uncomplicated and sincere love of freedom, a keen sense of honor and a restless passion for battle, adventure, and life. (p. 465).
Duchesne quotes lines from Beowulf:
As we must all expect to leave
our life on this earth, we must earn some renown,
If we can before death; daring is the thing
for a fighting man to be remembered by. …
A man must act so
when he means in a fight to frame himself
a long lasting glory; it is not life he thinks of.
In this analysis, White men jumping off buildings and sky surfing are reenacting a fundamental script of Western culture—the same script that underlies Western energy, inventiveness, exploration and creativity. While I argue that this berserker military ethos of daring and adventure is not the whole story of Western individualism (there are also the morally constructed egalitarian ingroups that feed into today’s stifling political correctness; see here, p. 23ff), I think Duchesne has a key insight that explains the psychology of a great many White men and is likely a critically important aspect of the evolutionary psychology of the West.
And yes, Kusz is probably right that White men who engage in extreme sports think of themselves as “extraordinary and exceptional individuals who are different from, and superior to, anyone not willing to attempt such potentially dangerous athletic exploits.” Nothing wrong with that. As we head into the multicultural deathtrap of the future, it is critical that such men develop an explicit sense of their White identity and interests and that they redirect their sense of physical daring and adventure to lead their people in the struggles that lie ahead.

There is a lot of truth in this article. A Tanzanian friend of mine recently said to me that “only Whites would do such sports that risk their lives for personal achievement and adventure”. I think its also has to do with Maslow’s heirarchy (self actualization). So maybe its a luxury for highly industrialized nations where individuals have more opportunities to pursue their dreams and goals.

I live in a part of Europe that draws dozens of base jumpers every summer due to some very steep mountains, and though there are a few females among them I have never ever seen a colored person jumping off a cliff (with a parachute, that is..). So this is definitely a racial thing, an innate psychological trait also responsible for the attitudes that made our Aryan forefathers conquer lands and establishing civilizations and high cultures where ever they went. @Franklin Ryckaert: Groups are important but I wouldn’t go so far as to say groups are all that matter. Ultimately, it is the genes of individuals that get passed down – or don’t. This is not to minimize the importance of groups, and paradoxically, Whites need other Whites in order to flourish as individuals. But it is also the individualism of White culture that had made life worth living in the first place for most of us.

It’s amazing, because I have been mulling this matter of extreme sports for quite a while. I indulge in some of it, albeit at the less extreme end of the spectrum of extreme. It’s not just that you never see non-whites, but also that the whites you do see are much more nordic in appearance, and that this effect increases toward the more extreme end of the spectrum…of extreme. I would put things like walking across the ice to the poles, serious mountaineering, free climbing, and base jumping from extreme heights, in that bracket.

I don’t think there is a dearth of potential courage, but a legacy of really serious conditioning to contend with. Courage and risk taking are no defense against the psychological techniques that have been deployed against us. I often hear the story that whites are somehow maladjusted in evolutionary terms for not seeing their ethnic interest..and so deserve extinction. But this is BS…you only have to go back a few decades to find whites totally in touch with their ethnic interests. We’ve been conditioned.
This comes back the guilt and shame matter. A lot of us feel it or are easily pushed into feeling it in the face of adversity and challenge from certain quarters about certain sorts of thing.
It’s a mistake to confuse this with a lack of courage, when it is more to do with conditioning. The bravest whites in the past, would feel such shame if they broke a code of honour…enough shame to kill themselves. That was conditioning as well, but you wouldn’t confuse it with cowardice?
So it’s about conditioning, and the question is whether it takes more courage to look at oneself and see how one is reacting with guilt and shame and fear, than to comfort oneself with notions of being above or impervious, despite knowing deeper down it’s BS.

@Mickey Meadows: Yes it is both biology and culture (or conditioning). Whites have the innate biology necessary and I agree that Whites had the right qualities overall until very recently. It is only the last few generations that Whites became so suicidal; about the time television and education came to dominate our culture, especially for young defenseless White children. Their parents had no idea what was being done to their kids.
We often forget that segregation only ended fairly recently. And I know for a fact that the use of the “N” word was common in the rural areas of America, even in the presence of blacks, up until the early 1970s. Most of our grandfathers lived in a world where it was never questioned that White men ruled.
I believe the advent of mass communications on an industrial scale, combined with mass education of small children, allowed and unprecedented reprogramming of an entire population, in a short time period. What would have taken centuries before took place in a couple of generations. Biathlon in only behind football in popularity in Germany, something I am pretty sure has something to do with not only Germany being good at it, but also something to do with the spectators and the athletes all being whites. The attitude also seems to be a lot more relaxed at these all white gatherings, and you usually talk with other spectators to a degree you don’t do at a football game.
It seems not only winter sports is having this implicit whiteness boom, we can find something similar with a cottage/country house boom in Europe, where people live in the city during the working week, and then retreating to their cottages/country houses in the weekends. These cottages are usually multi-generational, so in many instances it is where extended families meet. At first I thought it was a special Scandinavian phenomena, but it seems to be all of Europe, and have little to do with how rich people are in a country.
When the “news of the world” scandal broke in England for instance, we learned that Cameroon, Rebecka West, and other powerful people in England all have country houses where they visit each other during the weekends, and where their children can play outside without their parents worrying themselves to death about cars, getting mugged, etc.
If we go to Germany, it looks like the same pattern.

@Franklin Ryckaert: Yes group survival is a very important issue for Whites, especially now when we are being targeted as Whites like no other group is. Part of the problem is that the term collectivism is associated with socialism/communism and has a negative connotation. It is generally seen as a dictatorial system that crushes individuals. But of course, this isn’t what we mean when we talk about collectivism vs individualism.
We mean things like devotion to one’s family, to one’s town, to one’s state, to one’s nation. Also, connection to one’s belief system and those that share it (e.g. Churches). We humans are social animals. I think we have talked about coming up with other terms beside collectivism to describe what we mean, when talking to the general public. Maybe terms like community, neighborhood and family resonate better. We want them to think of a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner spent with family and friends in a community where all the members share the same culture and values— not some dreary socialist housing under “collectivist” control. It may just nomenclature, but I think it matters.
Sports should be without color and relgious bigotry. However, it’s not the case in the West. Several sports which are dominated by Blacks and Asians athletes are dominated by White managers and coaches. Women in sports are discriminated on basis of sex and their religion.

Looking back to the early 1960′s when I first started engaging in what today are considered “extreme” sports, the only thing that I notice different is the equipment.
For example, what’s become known as White water rafting was done in the early 60′s on truck inner tubes or air mattresses. You kind of hung on, and hoped you didn’t hit a rock or submerged log, or cut yourself on a sharp rock or a log. The only protective equipment was a pair of Converses to keep your feet from getting cut. LOL. You go to the same places today the rafters got all kinds of equipment, and they get killed or drown regularly. Does the equipment weight them down? Or get caught in rock crevices etc.
Diving or jumping off of bridges & rock overhangs into mountain rivers doesn’t seem that popular today, but, some today parachute & bungii jump off of places like the New River gorge bridge in WV.
Maybe there is less general participation, and more specialized participation?
I gotta wonder how a kid in his teens or early 20′s can afford the equipment, or even the rentals—particularly the high school age kids.
Even if the equipment had been available way back then, who could have afforded it? Ask yourself that.

I had to write a research paper for a Sociology class once and I was going through the Library database looking for information on something and I came across a Masters Thesis on the breast feeding habits of working class women in Mexico City! NASCAR is probably the only mainstream extreme spectator sport. It’s wild cousin, sprint car racing, is far more edgy and visceral, however. I saw one of these races for the first time a few weeks ago and it’s even a little scary for the spectators, depending on the track you‘re at. Part of the appeal of motor sports is the element of danger, however remote, that the people in the stands expose themselves to (as with the P-51 crash in Nevada a few weeks ago.)
There’s not what you’d call widespread involvement in extreme sports among whites. But many mainstream (and non-extreme) pastimes that are most popular among whites, such as motorcycling, skateboarding and hunting/target shooting, also incorporate elements of danger or lethality. Why so much white involvement? It may go back to the European notion of dying in battle. Attaining elevated status through a noble or heroic death.
My impression is that blacks have always been confounded or perplexed by white notions of heroism. (Not quite so true with hispanics.) There’s surprisingly little recognition among modern blacks of the 180,000 white Union troops who died in combat during the Civil War. The pictures of the firefighters who perished on 911 would also seem to verify this. A dozen or so black faces (and as many mulatto) among the 343 who lost their lives. Most were Irish, English, Italian, Polish, etc.

If you want to base jump off the New River Gorge Bridge in WV, you have to have had at least 100 prior parachute jumps to qualify. Plus, you must use and meet certain equipment standards. Base jumping limits the number of participants to a small group who spend big bucks.

Of course the professors article is True. I use the word True, because how many people other than whites, would do things like hang from an Alpine Peak, supported by a rope, ten thousand feet in the air. Europeans have lost thousands of people to mountain climbing, and I doubt this is true of any other culture/race.

The great Neil Armstrong, was, as were other whites involved in aviation involved in aviation, very brave and daring men. Someone in an interview once asked Armstrong about his narrow escape from an incident when he was a test pilot, and whether he didn’t worry about getting killed, and he answered, ” Yes, I could have gotten killed but I didn’t.” His answer leaves us as puzzled as when we asked the question, doesn’t it?

These students are correct of course and it has been this way in academia probably since the end of WW2. When I was going to college in the early ’70′s the same held true for many of my “professors”. Kusz is doing what he knows he needs to do in order to assure his “place in academia” and his success in his career. In other words- he is just another sellout to his race, and I firmly believe that deep down inside these people do not really believe the nonsense they regurgitate regarding issues of race or “diversity”. It is just all part of getting to the goal line for them.

I have for some time been pointing out to folks that only Whites do extreme sports, that this is part of the White psyche. They think about it for a moment and then smile in recognition. Whites love extreme sports, whether observing or doing.

Risk for reputation is strong in Whites. Fighting skill is valued by just about all races, as far as I know. And why not? Without it, the group dies off.

On the matter of your being white or not. It’s not really a matter of complexion alone…of course it is true European Jews look a lot like Europeans, strongly suggesting a lot of intermarriage, despite Jews also preserving shared commonality and distinctiveness.
But I’m sure you’ve noticed the capitalization of White. It’s a now a noun, and doesn’t relate only to skin colour.
The reason I think you ought to see that it is fair and reasonable for Whites to have the right to define themselves as distinctive from Jews, is that Jews very much do define themselves as distinctive from Whites. It’s not fair to demand that we have a weak identity, just an umbrella identity for a melting pot, that includes Jews. While Jews in fact enjoy a strong identity that does not include us, and more importantly do not regard themselves as a european people.

There is an Interesting wrinkle on all this, apparently there is evidence that life may have been much more violent in the past, at least in one sense. It seems counterintuitive because we focus on the absolute numbers killed in wars today, but relatively speaking, the number of people killed in battle may be way down. The idea of the “noble savage” appears to be completely false. Somewhere around 30% of all men could expect to die in battle in hunter-gatherer societies which dwarfs the number killed, as a percentage, even in Russia during WWII.
Pinker is coming out with a book that is supposed to make this point, so we’ll see what it says. But on the other hand, as you point out, the technology exists to wreak incredible havoc like never before.
But I bet if you had asked people in 1950 if America would go another 60 years without a war killing millions of Americans, they would have said “no”.

It’s interesting to me the amount of positive weight many posters here put on a well-organized and efficient society, with everything neat, clean and in its place and every rule followed. Northern Europe is like that and the people seem to like it OK. The manicured-lawn suburbs of the USA are the same. Both give me the creeps. Guess I’m an outlier or an anachronism, but I fail to see how that sort of social conformity squares with exploration, adventure, innovation, or individualism. Did my Germanic and Celtic ancestors fret about whether the neighbors were following the rules by mowing their lawns every week? I doubt it.
