Ideological Agendas Subverting Academic Integrity

There are certain subjects about which any nonsense can be published in papers and dissertations with the likelihood that examination and peer review processes will be suspended. If the subject can be labelled, however carelessly, as “far Right” then the aspiring “scholar” can embark on his or her thesis or paper feeling confident that precision of definitions and accuracy of citations is unnecessary. It is an easy method of forging a career in academia, knowing that publishers, editors, examiners and peer reviewers are going to accept any garbage at face value.

Recently I found by happenstance that an individual, Jennifer B. Robinson, has become an expert on national security and defence in Australia, at the expense of myself and others by taking the anti-Right option by which, as many have shown, a lifelong job might be had. Robinson gained her doctorate for a thesis on a “Trans-Tasman far right terrorism network,” on which she attained expertise because the “network” is her invention. Who can know a subject better than the person who made it up? The thesis is presently subject to a complaint with the awarding university in Australia. Just how worried Dr Robinson is by this complaint can be deduced by her having soon afterward published in a “scholarly” journal a paper on the same subject, with the name of mass-murderer Brenton Tarrant sensationally included in the title.

What is particularly significant is that Dr Robinson presumed to identify me with sundry ideological labels, and in particular as an “Islamophobe,” by the cunning expedient of not citing a single word I have written or spoken. She must have used an extreme avoidance strategy, as my corpus of material on the Middle East, Zionism and Islam is quite extensive over a period starting from 2010. There is even a work by Australia’s primary Islamic scholar on the very subject of “Islamophobia,” Dr Gabsi, in which he cites my 2014 book Zionism, Islam and the West. That is to say, a notable reference on the very subject Dr Robinson is writing about, on her own doorstep, and she managed to avoid it. Dr Robinson did not even have to bother reading Zionism, Islam and the West to discern its character, having been translated into Arabic. It seems that Dr Robinson studiously avoided what I had written on the subject, otherwise her premise about a “Trans-Tasman network” would not amount to much.

However, what is most significant is that, leaving aside the doctoral thesis for the while, the lack of a single citation on my writings did not give pause for thought to the editor or peer reviewers of Terrorism and Political Violence, published by Taylor & Francis.

Moreover, to compound this travesty of “scholarship,” the editor of the journal, Dr James Forest, seems to have had such a blasé attitude towards accurate and reliable research, and to be so lacking in honor and a sense of justice, that he could not deign a reply to my concerns on what I regard as very serious allegations and libels against me. If in some manner I am mistaken, then I unreservedly apologise and retract.

            Dear Dr Forest 

I wish to submit a complaint regarding the above paper by Dr Jennifer Robinson.

 

I am linked by a mendacious use of network theory to the appalling atrocity committed by Tarrant, and by the same questionable methodology to a supposed ‘network’, associated with terrorism and extremism in Australia and New Zealand.

1. Implicating me with any type of Islamophobia is an outright lie. I have always urged opposition to Islamophobia.

 My book Zionism, Islam and the West was published in 2014, and remains available, and readily locatable. The book was reviewed and recommended by Hajji Abdullah Drury (https://indiannewslink.co.nz/omni-shambles-of-the-west-in-the-middle-east/), former spokesman for the NZ Islamic Assn., and of the Islamic association at Waikato University.  An Arabic translation was undertaken by Dr Mahmoud Braham, Algerian scientist.  Dr Zouhir Gabsi, who has been acknowledged as Australia’s leading scholar on Islam, cites the book multiple times in the introduction to his book Muslim Perspectives on Islamophobia (2024). In an email to me dated 17 June 2026 he states of  Zionism, Islam, and the West, that it is “an important and honest work.”

2. I do not know nor have I in any way ever been associated with most of the individuals mentioned by Dr Robinson.

3. There is no “network,” at least so far as I am aware, and no amount of intricate connecting of lines and arrows can show that in an honest and reliable manner.

I could extend my comment in regard to this paper, but will leave it to you as to whether you wish to pose any questions to me, rather than elaborate here, in what I suspect might be a waste of my time in trying to have such shoddy research methodology actioned in the interests of genuine scholarship.

 Dr Forest is an academic of significance. He has influence in shaping U.S. policy from what can be gathered from his linked-in profile. He states that he was Professor and Director of Security Studies at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, where he taught “graduate and undergraduate courses on international security, terrorism, homeland security, counterterrorism, WMD and several other security-related topics.” Since 2011 he has “taught a graduate course on terrorism and counterterrorism at the Fletcher School, Tufts University.” He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Terrorism & Political Violence. He served for 3 years as Assistant Dean for Academic Assessment at West Point, and after the Combating Terrorism Center was launched, was the Director of Terrorism Studies for 6 years.

After this letter I followed with a brief email requesting that Dr Forest reply by September 4. That was obviously too much of a task. Could it be that he simply has no answers to my concerns?

Complaint to Publisher

Having failed to obtain a response from Dr Forest, I wrote of my concerns to Taylor & Francis, publisher of the journal. The response was predictable; another lack of regard for scholarly standards. Perhaps the reference to “Taylor & Francis [taking] all matters of research integrity and publishing ethics seriously,” is supposed to be taken as a bit of lighthearted slapstick? No details of how the publisher “seriously conducted [the] investigation” are available. The reply follows:

Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. Taylor & Francis takes all matters of research integrity and publishing ethics seriously and have conducted an investigation in accordance with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines.

After careful consideration of all information gathered during our investigation, we have concluded that there is no evidence of research misconduct or violation of publication ethics standards. The work in question adheres to accepted standards of scholarly practice.

Based on our findings, no corrective action is required, and we consider this matter closed.

Given such an attitude, how reliable is this journal, and what are the standards of the peer review process?

Dr Robinson, having obtained her Ph.D. in 2024 at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, Australian National University, Canberra, now works as a “Research Member of Addressing Violent Extremism and Radicalisation to Terrorism (AVERT), based in Melbourne, Australia,” at Deakin University. This centre provides “expert research” to the Australian Government and internationally on extremism, hate crime laws, and online radicalisation.

Surely one is justified in asking what kind of “expertise” is being provided when the processes in academia have become so dysfunctional and agenda-ridden?
