Mr. Taylor clarified to Mr. Kersey how to pronounce Stuyvesant. I would have pronounced it differently as well, but Jared is right. That spurred me to research. Supposedly, Mr. Stuyvesant, after whom a brand of cigarettes distributed by the “anti-fascist” millionaire heir Reemstma was named, came from Zeeland, after which New Zealand was also named. Ther are similar name in german like Stoevesandt, Stövesand, Stöwsand. Think also of Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben.

What does the name mean?
The name Stoiber is the Bavarian branch of a large family of names. This also includes the Steuber, Stäuber and Stauber – and the Stieber. All names have to do with dust. But they are not so easy to tell apart. There is also the name Staub, and it is even the most common one with about 3000 name bearers.
