White Pathology/Guilt

Recently in The Occidental Quarterly: Special Sections on White Pathology

This is an introduction to special sections in the Summer and Fall issues of The Occidental Quarterly focused on White pathology. Whatever blame for our situation that we place on others, the bottom line is that we are allowing the unfolding disaster to happen. It is unprecedented for a civilization to voluntarily cede political and cultural hegemony to others, particularly when so many of these people harbor hatreds and resentments toward our people and our culture.

The entire issues are available to subscribers to the electronic versions. (For print subscribers, the Summer issue has been mailed, and the Fall issue is in press.) Click here to subscribe ($30 for electronic subscriptions, $60 for hardcopy U.S. subscriptions).

Before I get to the special sections, I want to highlight another recent paper. Ricardo Duchesne, a professor of sociology at the University of New Brunswick and no stranger to these pages (e.g., here), has an article in the Fall issue on historians who are falsifying history in order to make it more amenable to their multicultural, anti-Western agenda. His title says it all: Multicultural Historians: The Assault on Western Civilization and Defilement of the Historical Profession.” As we are all aware, the academic world has become a seething cauldron of anti-White sentiment, and right now World History is Exhibit A. It is particularly important is that he is writing under his own name. All good writing is important, but in the long run it’s critical to have people who are out there in the open and willing to take the heat.

The purpose of TOQ is to develop an alternative intellectual universe in opposition to the current dispensation. With the addition of Prof. Duchesne and some of the other writers I will mention (the Summer and Fall issues also have excellent articles by F. Roger Devlin, Andrew Fraser, Nelson Rosit, and Jared Taylor), we are well on the way to achieving a critical mass of smart, well-informed writers able to mount an intellectually rigorous, honest critique of the current multicultural zeitgeist—indeed, the emerging multicultural police state. Doreen and Karen – a tale of two mothers

The elevation of Mrs Doreen Lawrence to Britain’s highest parliamentary chamber, the House of Lords, should come as no surprise to seasoned observers of the British political elite.

For as the mother of arguably the most important murder victim in modern British history, she occupies a special place in the political firmament somewhere beside Bob Geldof and the late Princess Diana — perhaps equivalent to Rosa Parks or the parents of the sainted Trayvon Martin.

While no-one can put a name to any of the dozens of teenage Blacks murdered every year in London since then, Doreen’s son Stephen Lawrence was different — he was killed by Whites and his death was an opportunity to create the most potent weapon that has ever been aimed at the British people:  mass demonization.

In an earlier age, tactical area bombing was used to deliver a relentless, sustained and never-ending barrage to cow a civilian population. But instead of the RAF this time the propaganda barrage was delivered by the media and Doreen Lawrence played a vital role as a living symbol of the evils of White racism.

So in a sense, her ennoblement is for services to the political elite, the human-rights industrial complex, the bureaucratic class,  the media and for everyone else who has benefited from the murder which took place twenty years ago this year. Read more

Narcissism and Nihilism: How Liberals Destroy Themselves

Narcissists need mirrors. This simple truth is central to an understanding of liberalism. Liberals don’t look at the world to understand it. Instead, they look for chances to feed their vanity and parade their moral purity. Earlier this year, there were riots by Muslims in the Parisian suburb of Trappes:

The Versailles state prosecutor said the trouble started on Thursday [July 18th 2013] after police stopped and carried out an identity check on a woman in a niqab, or full-face veil. The prosecutor said the woman’s husband had assaulted one of the officers and tried to strangle him so was immediately taken into custody at the police station. Muslim full-face veils have been banned from all public places in France after a controversial law introduced by President Sarkozy in 2011. The Collective Against Islamophobia in France released a statement complaining of “heavy-handedness” and “provocation” by the police during the identity check. (Paris riots sparked by police identity check on veiled Muslim woman, The Guardian, 21st July 2013)

When liberals look at these riots, they don’t see what’s really there: yet more destruction by violent, self-righteous and deeply misogynist non-Whites who despise liberals. Instead, they see a blameless minority crushed by police racism and state oppression. They saw the same thing when Sweden experienced the gratitude of its own rapidly growing non-White “communities” in May 2013:

Hundreds of youth have burned down a restaurant, set fire to more than 340 cars and attacked police during a fourth night of rioting in the suburbs of the Swedish capital, shocking a country that dodged the worst of the financial crisis but failed to solve youth unemployment and resentment among asylum seekers. Violence spread across Stockholm on Wednesday, as large numbers of young people rampaged through the suburbs, throwing stones, breaking windows and destroying cars. … Rioters defied a call for calm from the country’s prime minister, going on the rampage after nightfall damaging stores, schools, a police station and an arts and crafts centre in the four days of violence.

“We see a society that is becoming increasingly divided and where the gaps, both socially and economically, are becoming larger,” said Rami Al-khamisi, co-founder of Megafonen, a group that works for social change in the suburbs. “And the people out here are being hit the hardest … We have institutional racism.”

“The reason is very simple. Unemployment, the housing situation, disrespect from police,” said Rouzbeh Djalaie, editor of Norra Sidan newspaper. (Swedish riots rage for fourth night, The Guardian, 23rd May 2013) Read more

Are Whites Pathological? Yes and No: Part 2

Go to Part One.

Part one of this writing examined the status of White people from an individualistic, in contrast to an aggregate, perspective.  Part two explores the implications of that analysis and depends on the reader’s familiarity with the material in part one.

White analysis, advocacy, and action need to be grounded in the multiple realities that comprise total reality.  In this writing, aggregate- and individual-based analyses yielded different, and, seemingly at least, contradictory, truths about the White circumstance.  Yet another frame of reference to bring to bear on this concern is the moment-to-moment experienced existence of actual White people — you, me, and every other White person alive now, as well as those who have already completed their journeys through life and those not yet born.  From that, call it, existential perspective, there are as many White realities and there are, or have been or will be, White people.  Living, breathing, mortal White people don’t live their lives in the collective or in the abstract.  They fashion particular lives within their particular circumstances, and that undertaking turns out well for them or it doesn’t.  Whether it is immoral or shortsighted, it is understandable that individuals will do what they can, including with respect to racial matters, to ensure that they and their loved ones do well — gain status and power and material wealth and all that can provide — both now and in the future. Are Whites Pathological? Yes and No: Part 1

Kevin MacDonald recently noted,  “Whatever blame for our situation that we [Whites] place on others, the bottom line is that we are allowing the unfolding disaster to happen.  It is unprecedented for a civilization to voluntarily cede political and cultural hegemony to others, particularly when so many of these people harbor hatreds and resentments toward our people and our culture.”  Whether or not the kowtowing going on with Whites at the present time is unprecedented — it very well may be; I don’t know history well enough to make a determination on that — it is certainly a remarkable phenomenon.  If it continues, it is social and cultural, and even demographic, suicide.  I am pressed to think of another issue facing Whites that demands analysis, understanding, and action more than this one.  White pathology, a term Dr. MacDonald employs in his analyses, has a disease connotation for me and doesn’t quite hit the mark as a label or metaphor for what’s happening.  I am more comfortable with misguided, self-destructive or shortsighted, somewhere in there — I think we are closer to being dumb than sick — but pathology works well enough for my purposes in this writing to employ it along with other descriptors.

Professor MacDonald has pointed out two contributing factors to White pathology: individualism and the negative impact of Jewish elites:

There are doubtless a great many factors accounting for the general willingness of Whites to allow themselves to be pushed aside and to voluntarily become a minority amid a sea of non-Whites, most of whom hold historical grudges against them.  My general view is that these cultural transformations are the result of a complex interaction between preexisting tendencies of Europeans toward individualism interacting with the rise of a Jewish elite hostile to the traditional peoples and culture of Europe.

He has also pointed out how Whites’ attraction to moral universalism does them in:

While the West pursues its utopian fantasies with great moral fervor, the rest of the world continues as it has always been — except that they are now colonizing us.  .  .  .  Attempts at erecting utopias will ultimately result in huge psychological tension as people are expected to swear allegiance to universalist abstractions even as they see their neighborhoods invaded by non-Whites, even as their jobs are outsourced to foreign countries or taken away by immigrants, and even as they see the political and cultural power of their own group declining — in a word, displacement.  In these circumstances, the more selfish and particularist emotions centered around family and ethnic group inevitably bubble to the surface to compete with the universalist abstractions.  In the contemporary world these abstractions are being imposed on us by elites — including the Jewish component.

While I hope it is not at the expense of appreciating the significance of collective concerns and realities, I must admit I am to a good extent characterized by the individualism that Dr. MacDonald has noted, and, indeed, I have been greatly influenced by Jewish artists and intellectuals, among them ones that inform this paper, the novelist and philosopher Ayn Rand (Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhead, The Virtue of Selfishness) and the developmental psychologist Abraham Maslow (Toward a Psychology of Being).  I get ideas wherever I can find them, and I don’t a priori reject an idea based on the category of person that offers it.  I’m not convinced that these tendencies are detrimental to me, but this is not the context to argue that issue, at least directly.  Whether on balance they serve me, and others, well or not, I’ll attempt here to put my dispositions in these directions to positive use.  Namely, I’m going to approach this issue of White pathology — or shortsightedness, whatever to call it — from a Rand-influenced individualistic angle, and I’ll draw heavily on Maslow’s idea of a hierarchy of needs. Damning Indictment: Lying Liberals and Liberal Lies

So okay: Britain’s got rape-gangs. This is not so good from the feminist point of view. But look on the bright side: the ludicrous excuses about the rape-gangs are being made by powerful women. In “The Blessings of Diversity”, I looked at the weasel words of the glass-ceiling-smashers: Sue Berelowitz, Joanna Simons and Laura Johnston. Feminists will be pleased to hear that there’s more to come. Here’s another glass-ceiling-smasher with more ludicrous excuses:

Thames Valley Police Chief Constable Sara Thornton said she was sorry the paedophile ring [in Oxford] had not been brought to justice sooner. Asked if she had considered offering her resignation she said: “I think the focus for me is on driving improvements into the future.” She told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme the cases were originally looked at individually and added: “I don’t think we understood the extent that the abuse was systematic and it was organised. It was only when we sat down, pooled our information with that of the social workers, that we began to piece together the picture which explained what was happening in terms of this criminal network in Oxford.” (Sex gang victim accuses council, The Shropshire Star, May 14, 2013)

Chief Constable Sara Thornton’s words might look like English, but they’re not. They’re actually Weaselese, the special language used by liberals to evade inconvenient reality and escape personal responsibility. To understand what the Chief Constable really means, you need to read this:

Oxford sex gang: girls as young as 11 “forced into prostitution”

Girls as young as 11 were forced into prostitution and trafficked around the country by the Oxford paedophile ring. The gang of seven – convicted at the Old Bailey on Tuesday – used and abused their victims over long periods of time, subjecting them to “extreme depravity”, including biting and being horse-whipped. And, as with the Rochdale grooming ring, opportunities to stop the abuse were missed time and again. One of the victims described how she was even threatened with arrest for wasting police time when she tried to report the abuse. Read more

Learning from Birdman

I teach a course on sport in society in a university, which has brought me close to the culture of sport, its values, its ways.   Examining the workings of the sports realm has helped me acquire what could be termed an anthropological, or sociological, perspective on how the rest of American life goes about its business.

The topic for today: the sports world isn’t big on moral inventorying, self-condemnation, guilt, groveling, and apologizing.  Invariably when athletes do something that is called into question they refer to whatever it is as a “mistake.”  They don’t say “I did something wrong,” or “I did something bad,” or “I’m bad.”  They say, “I made a mistake,” as if it is akin to adding up the numbers in their checkbook wrong.  They take the morality out it.

To illustrate, there’s a prominent major league pitcher who will remain nameless, who in his younger days stole twenty-three computers and was dismissed from the university he was attending at the time.  He says now that it was a mistake to have done that.  Not wrong, a mistake.

Whatever it is—drunk driving, drug use, robbing a convenience store, you name it—to athletes (and of course I’m generalizing here), it’s a mistake.

And what do the inhabitants of the sport culture do after they have made a mistake?  They move on.  What happened in the past happened.  That’s over.  You aren’t going to change it.  You don’t dwell on it, you don’t let it define you; you don’t allow it to tie you up or affect or control your current actions.

And importantly, you don’t let it take your mind off what most matters: today’s game.  You need to play today’s game well and win it.  So move on. Read more
